You're not thinking like a casual fan. A casual fan wouldn't get uptight about anything because they just don't give a crap. I'm talking about the guy flipping through the stations on a Sunday afternoon or the wife who doesn't know whether she wants to sit down and watch the game with her husband or not. They see the game and they recognize the teams, so they decide to watch. But maybe if they see the game and don't recognize anything they see, they decide to do something else. They are not going to be upset and they're not going to say "**** football!" They're just going to shrug their shoulders and keep channel surfing. Why would a casual fan be so uptight about a jersey? That makes absolutely no sense. No one is going to stop watching because they get different jerseys. Sure, maybe a casual fan decides they like some other team with new jerseys. But I can't imagine one person going, "they changed these old jerseys? **** football!"
Brand identity is a huge thing, and the NFL has tremendous brand identity. Gradual and minor changes are fine. Sudden, radical changes would very likely hurt the league.
