PFT: "Booger" McFarland traded to Colts

Nope. Sorry, there wasn't. Maybe in Indy and AZ, but as a national story it was all about "THE PATRIOTS RUN IS DONE because they've lost too many guys." I'm not saying Edge's FA wasn't a story, but there was said to be pretty much NO EFFECT due to his departure, along with the two defensive players - especially in comparison to the Givens-McGinest-AV defections.

There was all kinds of talk about Edge. Plenty of it here and how it was the end of the Colts. There was no fanfare for Trip or Thornton because most people outside of Indy did not know who they were. McGinest and AV are much more high profile.

don't like this for the Colts, a #2 for an aging DL with big salaries upcoming. Day one picks are the foundation of any long lasting team.

And yet the Patriots traded a Day one pick for Dillon in 2004 and a Day one pick for Starks in 2005.

Of course with Peyton 31 next year and Harrison even older, the Colts' window doesn't have too many years left.

FWIW - The Colts are one of the youngest teams in the NFL. As far as I can tell, Peyton is improving (his passing on the run is much better, IMO).

Also with the colts philosophy on spending big on a select few, they need those good draft picks to be the high performing lower paid players on the roster.

Both sides should be happy with this one. Bucs are going nowhere and Booger apparently has lost a little, so they're overjoyed with a #2.

On the other hand, the Colts need a big body desperately and Booger was a fine player with a great attitude a couple years ago. Every reason to believe he might enjoy a rebirth under Dungee and a more successful program.

And it's going to be a low second rounder.

Win win.

Which is why this is expensive to that organization long term.
They should be falling behind us next year in quality and quantity of drafted players brought in.

The Colts draft as well as anybody.

I don't know if I'd say as well as anybody. They have a number of recent first day picks who haven't done all that much. Peyton and that receiving core mask a good deal of weaknesses on that team.

I just saw a good point brought up about this on an Eagles messageboard. As things stand now, by dumping the second largest salary on their team, the Bucs will be 27 million under the cap next year. With Freeney still unsigned, wouldn't it be great if the Bucs signed Freeney away from the Colts with the end result being a #2 pick and Dwight Freeney for Booger McFarland?

I don't ever remember saying that a figure less than the avg. NFL salary is significant.

Both the Colts and Freeney's agent say that he will be playing for the Colts next season. The Colts said they will tag him if they can't get a long term deal worked out first. That would mean two first round picks.
