Pats should hire Steve Spagnuolo as next Head Coach

It blows my mind that people are still out here advocating to hire a defensive guy as the coach.

That's what we've been doing for the last 25 years.

And it hasn't worked in the last six and it hasn't just not worked It hasn't worked on a historically bad level.

I don't think I could handle them hiring a defensive guy as the head coach. It might be the final straw.

It might be the final straw.
Fans have had it rough. This year especially. Hiring a HC who gives no evidence of improvement means without wholesale changes people will stop caring.

I’m on the verge. I feel it.

Mayo trots out Maye and pulls all the stops to beat the Bills and their backups is the rotten cherry on the sh-t sundae of this season.

Spags draws a hard no from me. Some guys are destined to be great coordinators but poor HC's. Spags is like Fangio that way and should stick with his strengths.

I feel it but I could never stop watching. Not unless we turn into something along the lines of the Little Giants.

I accept fully, today on the first day of the year that this upcoming year will be no different than this what.

5 wins tops.

I will live with it if they make the right choices next off-season. I mean hiring the most sought-after offensive mind and GM of that cycle and investing heavily in trades and the draft. It's a lot.

I think mcvay will retire or get fired this year and take a year off and he will be my number 1 target.

They need to get a Head Coach that can put together a coaching staff that can really develop players. I don’t know who that is, but it’s what they need.
Mike Vrabel
Ben Johnson
Joe Brady
Kellen Moore
Brian Flores
Kliff Kingsbury
Adam Stenavich
Kyle shanahan
Mike Lafluer
Drew Petzing
Bobby slowik
Dan Pitcher
Todd Monken

This is the list.

Signed an extension after the SB last year so he couldn’t have wanted to be a HC that badly. But I’m sure the Pats could get him if they wanted to trade for him with multiple first round picks including 2025’s to the Chiefs. Not sure if that’s a wise way to use our picks…
What's gotten lost in the "get rid of Mayo " conversation is we had the best to ever do it.. no coach is better. We had the 32nd ranked roster and he still could only get 4 wins. I doubt anyone out there could do better with the CURRENT roster.

I don't think it really matters. People are just snakebitten on Mayo and think his lack of experience is the problem.

The truth is just as many first time HC's work out as guys getting their second chance if not more. The majority of the playoff field this year will be coaches on their first run as a HC. Granted some are guys like Tomlin who got their first chance as HC and have had it for over a decade. But that just goes to show it can work out
Mayo's lack of experience is the problem, he also happens to be a first time HC. The next guy needs to have a proven track record.

Great DC for chiefs for 6 years
Prior NFL head coaching experience with St. Louis
From Massachusetts
Lots of connections with players and coaches throughout league
Makes great in game adjustments
Comes with instant credibility and respect
Wants to be head coach again

Pete Carroll:
HOF HC for Seahawks for 14 yeras
head coaching experience with New Englad
Lived in Massachusetts
Lots of connections with players and coaches throughout league
Makes great in game adjustments except near the goal line
Comes with instant credibility and respect
Wants to be head coach again

Maye alone makes this years team more talented than the last few years. RKK gets a little credit for not trying to fix Mac with a little Mayo.

He do you know who can put together a coaching staff that can develop players? Sorry Love The JJ but you always just list the “ hot” names when questions like this come up. And the fact that you listed Kliff Kingsbury as one of your choices discredits the whole list. He sucks ass as a head coach.

Somebody shoot me.

I take that back, many here would take me up on it.

Yes he sure does. I don't even waste any more post on fire Mayo because it's not going to happen. I've shifted my focus to the roster and the off season. Get the roster upgraded with real talent. If it doesn't look better next season then the current regime won't last.

There's no proven track record for a HC. It's always a gamble and people need to accept that.

You either get a coordinator who had some success, when we know being a good coordinator doesn't translate to being a great HC at any meaningful rate. Or you get a former HC who ended up getting fired somewhere else and now you have question marks on how successful they can be here. Or you get a college HC who you have to worry about if they can make the jump or are a Nick Saban/Urban Meyer type who can't.

The star of this coaching class is Ben Johnson who never was a HC before. The guy most associated with the Patriots is Vrabel who has barely over a .500 record, just got fired, has seen his team decline heavily, and who only won playoff games in one season 5 years ago.

There's no such thing as proven when it comes to this. It's like saying you want a proven elite QB in free agency. Well that just doesn't happen. You either draft an unknown, take a risk in FA on a guy you think you can unlock or you get someone who WAS elite but is older and now has question marks around him.

I should have been more clear. Proven track record as an NFL coach, not necessarily HC. Mayo did not have that when he was hired.

Hard pass, no more defensive minded HCs.
