If you can't stop an offense, copy it. With Branch in the fold and Moss doing his Go Route in the land of the frozen lakes, the Patriots' skill players closely resemble the Colts groupings now.
Precision route runners in Wayne and Branch. Both able to make their breaks at near full speed and bounce off their defenders. Neither has made a living running Moss' patterns although Wayne has that ability and certainly has the edge in physicality.
Master possesion WRs in Welker and Collie. Welker is the gold standard with Collie being the very effective new kid on the block. Smart, great hands, ability to read the defense.
Hybrid TEs in Clark and Hernandez. Clark is the leagues gold standard in this category....speed beyond the LBs' ability and oversized vs safeties. Hernandez is a young Dallas Clark.
RB....? Here is where the comparison gets fuzzy. Both offenses use the running game mostly to keep defenses off balance. Sure both teams would prefer to be able to pound it, but with the O lines constructed as pass protectors foremost and injury riddled backfields, these teams are pass first. Addai has slowed down, but he has a nose for the endzone in short yardage and pass catching skills out of the backfield. If BJGE could fill this role, I believe the BB would be very happy. If Taylor ever sees the field again, the Pats running game should be more diverse than Indy.
When comparing these rosters up to this point, you have to admit our Patriots are short on TDs. Clark and Wayne are endzone targets while our guys get their stats in the middle of the field. Add in the Gronk and hopefully Brady will have multiple open options in the redzone.
It will be interesting to see how Tate's role will be altered with Moss out in Branch in. They may use his speed to clear out the center of the field at times or continue his mid sideline patterns. Keep it unpredictable and let Brady have multiple options. I have to say I'm getting excited to watch this new offense.....our version of the Colts offense.
One last point. Brady looked his best running the no huddle offense vs Miami....Manning style. Hopefully the coordinators feel the same way. Back during the early decade run of success, the Patriots were the best in the league running the no huddle 2 minute offense. Taking what the D gave you...and not chucking it to your triple covered deep threat. Now that the deep chuck has been removed from the playbook, Brady will get the ball in the air quicker, preserving his longevity (we hope). Move the chains, keep the clock going with longer sustained drives. Remember when the Pats scored points on their first drive EVERY game. Seems like that memory had been replaced with either a 3 and out or a home run ball. If this new offense goes the way I believe it has been designed to, maybe the biggest beneficiary will be our defense. Keep 'em off the field and fresher. This is a depleted group depth wise.
