If you can't stop an offense, copy it. With Branch in the fold and Moss doing his Go Route in the land of the frozen lakes, the Patriots' skill players closely resemble the Colts groupings now.

Precision route runners in Wayne and Branch. Both able to make their breaks at near full speed and bounce off their defenders. Neither has made a living running Moss' patterns although Wayne has that ability and certainly has the edge in physicality.

Master possesion WRs in Welker and Collie. Welker is the gold standard with Collie being the very effective new kid on the block. Smart, great hands, ability to read the defense.

Hybrid TEs in Clark and Hernandez. Clark is the leagues gold standard in this category....speed beyond the LBs' ability and oversized vs safeties. Hernandez is a young Dallas Clark.

RB....? Here is where the comparison gets fuzzy. Both offenses use the running game mostly to keep defenses off balance. Sure both teams would prefer to be able to pound it, but with the O lines constructed as pass protectors foremost and injury riddled backfields, these teams are pass first. Addai has slowed down, but he has a nose for the endzone in short yardage and pass catching skills out of the backfield. If BJGE could fill this role, I believe the BB would be very happy. If Taylor ever sees the field again, the Pats running game should be more diverse than Indy.

When comparing these rosters up to this point, you have to admit our Patriots are short on TDs. Clark and Wayne are endzone targets while our guys get their stats in the middle of the field. Add in the Gronk and hopefully Brady will have multiple open options in the redzone.

It will be interesting to see how Tate's role will be altered with Moss out in Branch in. They may use his speed to clear out the center of the field at times or continue his mid sideline patterns. Keep it unpredictable and let Brady have multiple options. I have to say I'm getting excited to watch this new offense.....our version of the Colts offense.

One last point. Brady looked his best running the no huddle offense vs Miami....Manning style. Hopefully the coordinators feel the same way. Back during the early decade run of success, the Patriots were the best in the league running the no huddle 2 minute offense. Taking what the D gave you...and not chucking it to your triple covered deep threat. Now that the deep chuck has been removed from the playbook, Brady will get the ball in the air quicker, preserving his longevity (we hope). Move the chains, keep the clock going with longer sustained drives. Remember when the Pats scored points on their first drive EVERY game. Seems like that memory had been replaced with either a 3 and out or a home run ball. If this new offense goes the way I believe it has been designed to, maybe the biggest beneficiary will be our defense. Keep 'em off the field and fresher. This is a depleted group depth wise.

Our offense has more similarities to the Saints IMO, who I believe we're being modeled after.

Agree with most of this, especially the last paragraph. The Pats will be much better with a balanced attack.Move the chains. Not as good for the highlight reels, but it works against aggressive defences.Several teams now excel at getting pressure on QB's,the "small ball"game does a lot to neutralize those defences.Should be interesting today.

I disagree. Alot of Brees' success is due to his ability to move out of the pocket, often designed because of his stature. That will never be an option in NE.

And of course it eats up the clock and keeps our D off the field.

and how many super bowls have the colts won? let's stick to what works for us. we are not the dallas cowboys or colts with their fancy passing attack - that's not NE patriot football. save that kind of stuff for the wuss teams.

The New England Patriots Offense is based on the scheme designed by the New England coaches. All teams utilize things from other offenses.

man, people forget easily dont they???

we cant stop the colts offense RIGHT NOW, but we cant stop many of them at this instant either

were not copying the colts offense, we are just getting the best players possible, and using them

if u think back to the 03 and 04 defenses, they COULD stop the colts, and EVERYONE else that crossed their path, that defense was incredible, and it would make the colts offense look scared, and high schoolish

we just havnt attained ALL the required personnel for this level of play yet, but we are, and we will regain a formidable defense such as that, so we can stop the colts

as for the offense....i would take an early 2007 offense over a colts offense of this decade any time

The Colts play a single style, and do it well. BB approaches thing differently IMO, his goal is to be able to play any style to exploit the weakness of the D the team is playing in a particular week. Clearly this O is not at that point yet, but that is where we are going.

This is why we are seeing everything from 3TE sets to spread formations. The 3TE set may be the base O for certain games in Dec & Jan.

This is not new, Gronk and Hernandez hopefully will be a better version of Graham and Watson.

Our offense isn't anywhere similar to what the Colts do except for the sluggos and quick slants we sometimes do. Like some posters mentioned, what the Colts do is simple and they do it well. What we do morphs from game to game, depending on the opponent's weakness. It isn't any one thing.

If you think Wayne and Branch are similar players, I want what you're smoking.
