Patriots to work out Everett Brown, DL Florida State

Good. Brown's been lost a bit in all of the hype over other 3-4 OLB prospects, but he definitely deserves a look. Pat Kirwan had him dropping to the Pats at #23 in one of his mocks a few weeks ago. While this seems unlikely, it's possible that he will get bumped down by one of the rising DB/OLBs (Ayers?), especially because of his lack of height. I'm not sure yet where I would rate him compared with some of the others, but I'm glad the Pats are taking a hard look at him.

I'd given up on him at 23. One can hope.

*Everette Brown | Florida State, DE : 2009 NFL Draft Scout Player Profile

"At last month's Combine in Indianapolis, Brown posted the fourth-fastest 40 time for a defensive lineman (4.73 seconds), according to NFL.com. With that out of the way, he went through only position drills and a handful of other select exercises on Monday. On the 225-pound bench press, he recorded 29 repetitions. He also posted a 34-inch vertical leap. Brown, who led the Atlantic Coast Conference with 13.5 sacks last season, already has gone through one individual workout with the St. Louis Rams. He said he has another scheduled for Wednesday with New England." - Ira Schoffel, Osceola

Brown was a beast in college and I would pretty happy if the Pats took him at #23. OLB is still going to be a need (especially if we don't sign Peppers). Plus, my roomate who is a Florida State fan hates the Pats. If we get Brown, he'll puke. When that happens, I will laugh.

Most scouting reports say he is behind Wimbley at this point in their respective careers and Wimbley hasn't shown Cleveland fans much at this point.

I'll take brown over English. I think English is just a pass rusher nothing more. He needs to get stronger. I am hoping Brown falls out of the top ten and we use one of the 2nd rounders to get him.

I'll take Brown in a heart beat over English. Brown just keeps getting better and better. Look at his stats at Florida St and you will see that he doubles his stats in each of his 3 seasons.
It doesn't matter, he's not making it past Buffalo anyway. This is a mute discussion as far as I'm concerned and should be renamed "Should we trade up for Everett Brown? Or hold pat and settle for English or Barwin at 23.

Before we get too into this remember, the question to ask is:

Which player best fits the Pats system? The Pats undoubtedly have their eye on one OLB/DE in this class, which could be one of the reasons they haven't made a move on Jason Taylor.

The Seminoles play a 1-gap 4-3. English has good enough strength to play OLB in the 3-4. He's got tremendous rush moves. Brown and Orakpo look like straight speed guys who won't get away with blowing by NFL tackles as much as they did in college.

I'm sure the Pats have done their inquiries and have a good idea of who they covet.

Brown is definitely not a straight speed rush guy. Whether he can play in a 3-4 is one thing, but he is not a straight speed rusher.

Brown is a first round talent. Barwin I think is too. I don't think English is IMO.

English is one of the most debated players in this draft but Mayock recently compared him to LaMarr Woodley in his ability to leverage the edge and he also said that he is a much better pash rusher at this point then Woodley was. Mayock has him rated as his 20th best player and I feel as though he is a 1st Rd talent as well.

I agree, he's not my first choice at #23, but he'd be a solid value and consolation prize if NE couldn't land Barwin.

That's the beauty of the internet...they're all mute discussions.

Everett Brown is one of my favorite football players in this draft, but one I've always considered out of reach. If he were to do a Wilfork slide, then I think the Pats would have to consider him.

We can read all of the profiles, but what stands out to me after watching him for two seasons is his explosiveness. Simply stated, he knows how to defeat blockers. I don't think TEs and RBs can block him, and IMO he has the strength, quickness, and hand techniques necessary to succeed on the edge vs the league's OTs. I wish he were 6-4, but if he can get to the QB -- who cares!

In terms of coverage responsibilities and playing in space, he's no different than any of the other DE/OLB candidates. Fans try to evaluate these prospects based on Pro Day reports and observations from Combine positional drills. But that's not enough. The Pats view countless hours of game film, receive extensive input from their scouts, and involve their position coaches with hands-on private workouts.

Brown, along with the other edge rushers, are all conversion players, so each will go through a developmental stage. The Pats have a preference for balanced players (or those who have the tools to be), but will avoid one-dimensional players who are proven liabilities vs the run or in coverage. IMHO, Brown has a very high ceiling with enough athleticism necessary to make the conversion for the Pats. I still consider him a top 15 talent, who's slide all the way to #23 seems unlikely. But I'd keep the door open for him as one of the legitimate Pats prospects with the first pick...

Did the pats ever work out Patrick Willis? The reason I ask is b/c the Pats had the 24th pick, and he went at 10. If they considered Brown to be far and away a better prospect than anyone available at 23, or even the #2 OLB/DE prospect after Curry, they might trade up to San Fran's #10 pick (right in front of Buffalo) and take him. They have the picks to make the move (assuming SF is willing to trade back).

I don't recall if Willis had a private workout or visited. If BB thought Brown was unique and the missing element for the team, I'm sure he'd spend the picks to get up to #10. As it is, my guess is Brown is not considered to be that unique and that NE will find good value closer to #23 and can use the unspent picks to further help the team.
