ProFootballWeekly.com - New England Patriots: 2013 team needs

Nothing really new here that has not been discussed on the board over the past few months, but a good summary. Also comments on last years draft picks.

I disagree with the comment on Cannon:
OL — Don’t expect Bill Belichick to use an early pick on the interior O-line, but he could add some depth there behind Logan Mankins, Dan Connolly and Ryan Wendell. Tackle is a curious situation, which hinges on the Patriots re-signing Sebastian Vollmer. Assuming they do, his injury history is still a concern, and Marcus Cannon struggled when thrust into action.

He did struggle when at OG early in the year. But he did play a solid game when he started for SeaBass at RT.

Maybe you are referring to training camp/preseason as far as him playing RG? The general consensus from those who went to TC was that he was downright awful. Luckily he turned it around at RT though.

From what I remember, Cannon and Vollmer rotated a bit in the first 2 games of the regular season while Vollmer was getting his bearings back. Other than that, the only game that Vollmer missed was the Nov.22nd NYJ one, where I thought Cannon looked okay in Vollmer's place.

Cannon did receive a handful of snaps late in the year at RG, but it was only for a series or so, and I can't remember which game it was in. On the season, Cannon took part in 13.6 percent of the overall snaps, and was listed as a RT. (Vollmer ended up with a pretty solid year with 88.6% of the regular season reps)

I guess that's where he'll compete in the upcoming season assuming that Vollmer moves on, but I think that he may not be quite as much of a shoe in as some are assuming. That's just my take on it though. I think he'll be competing with a veteran OT free agent signing (and/or draft pick), along with maybe even McDonald and possibly even Zusevics, although the last 2 are unlikely in my opinion.

For the record, Nick McDonald took part in about 20% of the overall snaps on the season. I believe all were in the interior at G/C, so maybe Belichick doesn't view him as much of a tackle. Zusevics is probably still much of a developmental project, but could have a chance to make the 53 man roster if he shows some progression.

FWIW, The Pats have had contact with at least five RT types at the combine and pro days, mostly in the 2nd-4th round range.

That doesn't surprise me. It may also hint at them possibly not being entirely comfortable with Cannon as a fulltime starting RT, although that is just speculation, especially when you consider that we've had worse there.

I'd expect a competition of Cannon/draftee/veteran OT for the starter's job, with the backup falling to the other one/two.

Of course there's a long, long way to go before seeing any kind of finished product at many of the positions, so lots of things can happen before the end of TC.

Don't underrate Markus Zusevics as an OL option he was an intriguing prospect prior to his combine injury.
