The overview: The defending Super Bowl champion Patriots have won two straight Super Bowls and three of the past four. This is the season they are supposed to be most vulnerable, although coach Bill Belichick and QB Tom Brady apparently didn't receive that memo. Okay, so New England has more holes than usual. That doesn't mean they don't scare the daylights out of everyone.

The good, bad and ugly: Jaguars -- Good: Jacksonville's defense....
-----
Bad: The Jags don't get much out of the quarterback spot.
-----
Ugly: The Jags haven't beaten a team with a winning record since Oct. 16, when they edged the Steelers in Pittsburgh, 23-17, in overtime.
-----
Patriots -- Good: Have we mentioned the Killer B's, Belichick and Brady?
-----
Bad: The Patriots have given up 15 points a game fewer when LB Tedy Bruschi is in the lineup. He did not play yesterday due to a calf injury and his status this week is unknown.
-----
Ugly: The secondary, especially on the corners, is dreadful.
-----
One more thing: If the Patriots win, it could set up the playoff game everyone wants to see because if the Bengals beat the Steelers, the Pats would travel to Indianapolis to face the Colts, who they always seem to knock out of the playoffs. Just not this year.

The pick: Patriots 20, Jaguars 17. Wouldn't the NFL just love another snow-driven, prime-time game won by K Adam Vinatieri's leg?

STANDING PAT: Pats take it easy in prep for playoffs and Jaguars

This was recess. Class is now in session - the class, of course, being Jacksonville Jaguars 101.

The New England Patriots’ 28-26 loss to the Miami Dolphins yesterday featured plenty of wacky stuff - from Doug Flutie’s drop kick, to newly promoted receiver Bam Childress playing both ways, to the subs taking over for the final three quarters.

That was nice. But it bears no resemblance to what everyone expects to see Saturday night when the Patriots (10-6) host the Jags (12-4) in a wild-card playoff game at Gillette Stadium (8 p.m., Ch. 5).
-----
‘‘We realize how important every play is,’’ said Bruschi, who sat out with calf injury. ‘‘We have to make sure that the week (ahead) is just as important as the game. The week preceding the game is just as important, if not more important, to prepare yourself mentally. Make sure you know the ins and outs of the team you’re playing before you play them.’’
-----
‘‘A physical football team that plays great defense,’’ Vrabel said of the Jags. ‘‘They’ve got a good runner (either Fred Taylor or Greg Jones). I don’t know if we’re going to get Leftwich or (backup David) Garrard. Those are question marks. I think it’s important that we get in (the film room) and look at them as early as tonight or tomorrow.’’
-----
The Patriots have several factors working for them in this matchup:

—Bruschi - Bet on him being in the lineup Saturday night. He just laughed yesterday when asked if he could have played yesterday had this been a playoff game. ‘‘Shoot,’’ he said. ‘‘I don’t want to answer that. The playoffs are a different thing. I gotta make sure I’m right before anything. Because if I’m not able to do the things I can do, I don’t want to hurt the team out there.’’
-----
—The pass protection - The Dolphins had a league-high 48 sacks entering yesterday but left with only one, and that came on a corner blitz. The Patriots threw 28 passes and used backups Gene Mruczkowski and Billy Yates at guard for much of the day. Despite throwing a career-high 530 times, Brady was sacked only 26 times this season, tying his career low from 2004.
-----
—Special teams - With Johnson out, receivers Andre’ Davis and Tim Dwight injected some life into the dormant kick-return game. Davis had a 65-yarder, Dwight a 38-yarder. Johnson averaged only 22.4 yards per return this season, which ranked him 26th in the NFL entering the weekend. The Jags were 26th in covering kicks.

Despite throwing a career-high 530 times, Brady was sacked only 26 times this season, tying his career low from 2004.

El wrongo. His career high in attempts was 601 in 2002.

Jags revel underdog role as they prepare for Patriots

The Jacksonville Jaguars are big underdogs heading into the postseason - and maybe for good reason.

Quarterback Byron Leftwich is returning to the starting lineup after missing six weeks because of a broken left ankle. Running backs Fred Taylor and Greg Jones are nursing injuries. And the Jaguars have little playoff experience, getting back to the postseason for the first time since 1999.

They enter the playoffs having won eight of their last nine games, falling only to Indianapolis, but all the victories came against teams with losing records and a combined mark of 33-95.

Oh, yeah, and the warm-weather Jaguars (12-4) open the first round at two-time defending Super Bowl champion New England on Saturday night, when the temperature is sure to be below freezing.
-----
"We don't mind being the underdogs," linebacker Akin Ayodele said. "We'll take it and ride it. Do we want respect? Yeah, we want respect. But the only way you can get it is by earning it. We don't mind doing that. That's what we've had to do all year."

Ayodele added that even beating the Patriots, who have won three of the last four Super Bowls, might not do much to change the team's perception.

"I'll bet you that even if we do go in and we win, they will find something to say," he said. "They'll say, 'Oh, they got lucky or maybe the other team took us for granted.' I feel like we're not going to get (respect) until we win it all."

The Jaguars feel like they've been overlooked all season. Several players even referred to talk last week about New England and Cincinnati wanting to lose their finales so they could be the No. 4 seed and host the fifth-seeded Jaguars.

"We don't get the type of credit we deserve," Taylor said. "Everybody wanted us. That makes us feel special, right? When you're wanted, that makes you feel special."
-----
They fail to mention, however, that they beat the Seahawks in draining heat and humidity after Seattle flew cross-country for a 1 p.m. kickoff - 10 a.m. Pacific time. The Jags also like to skip the fact that they beat the Bengals without receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh and edged the Steelers in overtime without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and receiver Hines Ward.
-----
The Jags also need to get healthy.

Leftwich broke his ankle Nov. 27 and spent the better part of the last month on crutches and in a protective boot. He returned to practice last week but sat out Sunday for precautionary reasons. Now, Leftwich hopes to avoid being rusty against the Pats after the long layoff.

Jones missed the last two games with a neck injury, and Taylor has been slowed all season by a nagging ankle injury.

The Jaguars, already missing center Brad Meester and safety Donovin Darius, could be without linebacker Mike Peterson (wrist) and cornerback Kenny Wright (knee). Both were injured against Tennessee, but an update was unavailable Monday because the Jaguars took the day off while the Gator Bowl was played at Alltel Stadium.

Just what the Jags need

http://www.jaguars.com/story/4961.asp

This is what you wanted. It's everything you wanted all rolled into one.

You want respect? Here's the game that'll deliver it.

You want prime-time? It doesn't get any more prime than Saturday night in the playoffs. It's the time slot that traditionally delivers the highest ratings of the playoffs.
-----
Makes you angry, doesn't it? You want respect, don't you? You want the world to notice, don't you? Then here it is.

Nothing will earn you respect more fully than a win on national television against the most respected team in the game; a team that is undefeated in January. The Steelers couldn't beat them. The Eagles couldn't beat them. The Panthers couldn't beat them. The Rams couldn't beat them. The Titans couldn't beat them. The Raiders couldn't beat them. Not even the Colts could beat them. Whoa!
-----
The Jaguars can use the no-respect factor to their advantage. On what should be known as “Tank Sunday,†the Bengals and the Patriots tried to out-tank each other to move into the number four seed which, of course, will play host to the Jaguars. Marvin Lewis and Bill Belichick will tell you they were merely resting their players, but you know differently. They wanted to be the lucky team that plays the Jaguars.

New England is that lucky team and that's good for the Jaguars. In fact, it's exactly what the Jaguars need: a high-profile opponent in a prime-time match-up. It's everything you could want all rolled into one.

Nice catch. It kinda takes some of the credibility away from the article, eh?
