This is the pre-draft preview where we review the happenings since the end of the season and look at what could happen in the draft.
Dean Pees is gone and Bill O’Brien was worse than mediocre as the QB coach and defacto OC. Shane Waldron has also left the team, leaving the TE position without a coach.
The Pats have brought in Corwin Brown to be the new defensive backs coach. This should be a step up from Josh Boyer, who was replaced after one season. Brown is a former 4th round pick of the Pats and he’s also spent time with Belichick as a player and has coached under Weis at ND.
The Patriots announced that they will NOT be naming an Offensive or Defensive Coordinator with Belichick commenting that the coaches know their jobs, they don’t need titles to justify them. This led to many claiming that BB has finally let his ego go to his head.
GONE:
Jarvis Green: Signed with Denver
Ben Watson: Signed with Cleveland
Cam Baker: Was cut early into free agency much to the surprise of most every Pats fan. It later came out that Baker hustled during camp, but put it in cruise control for much of the season and was a negative influence in the locker room. Signed with Seattle
Junior Seau: Came back for a 20th season. Was pretty much a non-factor. He’s said he’s retiring. But he’s “retired” 3 other times already.
SIGNED:
Alge Crumpler – TE
Damione Lewis – DT/DE
David King - Punter
RFA:
Logan Mankins: Arguably the Pats best O-lineman. Because of the CBA status, Mankins is an RFA. Unfortunately, he’s not signed his RFA tender and he’s said he’s not happy with the way that negotiations have gone. This could turn into a long hold out unless he’s dealt during the draft.. If this happens, the Pats O-line will be in disarray.
Chris Taylor: Taylor was signed before the end of camp last year and ended up getting hurt. He spent the entire season on the IR. I can’t see the Pats tendering him which will make him a UFA.
ERFA:
Gary Guyton: Guyton made some great strides this year and was put in the unenviable position of having to start when Mayo was down with an MCL injury. I’d love to see the Pats lock him up long term.
Bret Lockett: Lockett is a special teams safety. His injury opened the door for Kyle Arrington to get on the field and show that he can shine on special teams as well. I expect that Lockett will be back to compete in camp.
The Pats current roster breakdown is this: (numbers only):
QBs - 4
RBs - 6
FB: - 0
WRs - 9
TEs - 3
OLs - 10
DLs - 7
LBs – 10
CBs - 5
S - 5
STs - 3
