OT: Steelers "We don't do the banner thing"

I really don't see anyone getting excited around here about it. Just an interesting story, from a fan perspective.

I'll tell you who's pissed. My old man, the Stillers fan. Called him up a few minutes ago.
Dad, remember the Patriots unveiling the Super Bowl banner last year and the year before that at the season opener?

*Chuckle* Yeah, yeah yeah, I remember, even I got chills for you guys! [Meaning me and the grandsons] But now it's OUR turn, boy.

That's just it, Pop. I read this morning that Rooney says there won't be a big celebration or banner unveiling at the season opener.

What?!? No, come on, they'll do something.

No, Rooney said they gave the team their rings, they've got the trophy, and they're done with it.

That's god[darned] bull$#it. I could be friggin' dead by the time they get back there again. [tirade continues...]
I knew he'd feel that way about it, just because that's how I'd feel. Well, except I'm confident my team will be back in it, he's more a pessimistic fan. He's more excited that I would be, but I'd be bummed too.

It seems your old man and me would get along! Except that he's a Stillers fan, of course..

He is right it will be 25-30 years before they sniff another trophy

As I said in the other thread... While they may look humble to some, the look cheap to others.

I agree that the unveiling of the banner is for the team and the fans. With this, IMHO, cheap Rooney is going to leave the fans out.

God, is so good to be a Pats fan...

I think the Steelers should do something for the fans, not so much b/c we did it and they have to keep up the tradition but I do think it's important to do "something".

On the other hand, Rooney's humility is admirable, I mean can you imagine what kind of "F U Patriots" ceremony Bill Polian would have if Indy ever managed to win a Super Bowl?

You have been starting several controversial threads lately.

Next thing you know you'll be posting photos of female golfers on the cheerleader thread.:rocker:

Well

I think everyone here has hit the nail on the head: it's not about the team, it's about the fans! I wasn't able to be at the razor for it last year, but i watched it on tv---and i would have been disapointed if they didn't do anything. Every team is different however, and if that's what they want to do then that's there perogative-----besides, we will put on another great show for the fans of NE, in setember 07 :rocker:

You guys are pissed off because Rooney just out-humbled us. This is like the Pats starting the "choosing to be introduced as a team..." thing.

we are not pissed off. Who the F care what Pitt does. As fans I think we like the banners. If that is not that way things are done there, that up to them.

I am genuinely disappointed that they aren't doing any type of banner ceremony, regardless of the reason. I felt the same way after the win at Denver after the AFCC game when the trophy was presented to the team in the locker room, instead of on the field. While I wasn't/won't be present at either event, I think it stinks for the fans who are.

"The Steelers will officially begin defense of their Super Bowl title, with players and coaches receiving their championship rings that night at Heinz Field."

I saw this in several articles, that they would receive their rings in front of the crowd, prior to the game. I think Rooney was misquoted.

Regarding the Banner thing? I think it has a lot to do with the way GIllette is configured. There's space for 2 or 3 more banners in that corner. The only sightlines disturbed are for SRO tickets.

How many other stadiums, particularly older ones, have such space available?

Not sure how you can say that they are out-humbling the Patriots when they are supposedly giving the players their rings at that game.

Gee sounds like your a little ticked because we do it first. Just like we will zip your mouth in the Playoffs again.

Personally I don't give a crap what the Steelers do or what thier fans think. I've had a hell of a time at all 3 opening game celebrations and the players all seem to be thrilled with the ring ceremonies at Kraft's house. Hopefully the Pats will have a bigger and better opening day party in September of 2007.

Does Tampa have a banner fromm 2002?

I don't know. I do know that, when the Pats hung the first banner in 2002, it was said to be the first for any SB winner. Again, I think it more relates to sight lines than anything else.

Maybe they broke down the tape of the SB game and found that they didn't win it, Seattle lost it.

[I fixed Mr. Rooney's quote]

"It's a big game, and it's a great way to open up, back on NBC, but no, we don't do the banner thing,......we do the Towel-thing here in Pittsburgh.'' Rooney said.

The Red Sox did one the size of the Green Monster and they do towels. Oh well...

How the hell did he out humble us? How is throwing down a banner, in celebration of what the team accomplished, and possibly motivating the players to go out and do it again not being humble? Hell, it's no less rude then to give out rings opening night either.

Note: I'm not saying they're wrong for handing out rings, just saying what we do is fine and what they do is fine. To each their own.

They need their towels for every time they meet the Patriots in the Post Season, they have what they need to wipe those teary eyes!

However, the SB XL officiating crew will be unveiling their Steeler banner during opening ceremonies.
