Re: OT:Report: Millen out as Lions team president, GM

One would think,in the name of all that is good and decent,Millen would have stepped down after two or three years and everything he tried did nothing to change the fortunes of this team....hope the Lions get out of the doldrums with a new person running the ship.....

Re: OT:Report: Millen out as Lions team president, GM

He had a much longer shelf life than anyone could have imagined...

Re: OT:Report: Millen out as Lions team president, GM

I wonder if the story is true? I saw an "interview" with William Ford Clay and he said that he thought Millen should be fired, but that he didn't have the authority.

Re: OT:Report: Millen out as Lions team president, GM

Roger Daltrey will be introducing Detroit's new GM soon.

Never has a worse GM and personnel man had more staying power. His continued presence in the NFL made Al Davis look like a genius for NOT hiring him. I truly could never figure out what kind of pictures he had of Ford to keep his job this long when he was so obviously over his head in every possible way. For the sake of the fans of Detroit I pray they can bring in someone to turn that franchise around, Detroit fans truly love their sports and don't deserve a franchise that has been so thoroughly run into the ground.

Gee i wonder if he could come on the Pats as a Player personel director

Re: OT:Report: Millen out as Lions team president, GM

What a franchise....
This guy was running that team into the ground on the way to 31-84 record, so they give him a fat contract extension...

Unbelieveable that he got that contract, even moreso that they stuck with this clown so long.

Good for the Detroit Fans, maybe Clay will let someone that knows something about football make the hiring decision this time.

About 2 years too late, but I actually feel good for the fans there. They deserve something so much better.

Re: OT:Report: Millen out as Lions team president, GM

'bout frickin' time, you ask me.

It was very noble of Millen to say he doesn't quit until he gets the job done, but how much time do you need before you realize you don't know what the hell you're doing? If you're trying to build a house and the frame falls down every time a breeze blows through, maybe it's time to call a contractor.

Even worse is how long it took Ford to fire him. Don't get me wrong, I think a head coach should always get three years (unless he produces a record like Rich Kotite), but after that if there's no noticeable improvement, it's time to give someone else a shot. Yet Millen got seven? (I know he's a GM and not a head coach, but still.) Even Bob Kraft was smart enough to fire Bobby Grier. Really, has any other fan base ever wanted the GM out so bad they held a protest outside the stadium? (And had more than five people?)

Honestly I don't know which club is in worse shape, the Raiders or the Lions.

Al Davis has forgotten quite a bit more about football than William Clay Ford ever knew.

Re: OT:Report: Millen out as Lions team president, GM

Well yeah. I mean for years now I've thought the Raiders were undoubtedly the worst team overall. But look what they've done since 2001 - two playoff runs, one Super Bowl appearance. Not a lot since then, but in all those years the Lions won a grand total of 31 games. Further, as the articles are pointing out, the Lions have won one - ONE - playoff game since the Fords bought the team 50 years ago. What's the point? Can a team even have fairweather fans when the weather sucks 80% of the time?!

I had to look twice than I got it.
That wasn't "unoriginal" at all.

A Lions fan once sent me this:

> > > > > Q. Why was Matt Millen upset when the Detroit Lions playbook
was stolen?
> > > > > A. Because he hadn't finished coloring it.

Millen was hated as a player, but has become a beloved figure to all Lions opponents.

I bet the guys at Bang Cartoons are crushed by this development, Millen was one of their best and funniest characters.
