OT: Ravens QB Steve McNair to announce retirement today

A great QB and an asset to the teams he played for,I wish him well in his post football endeavors.

A shame that he was only a foot and a half from Super Bowl glory because this guy deserved it.

A definate consideration for Hall Of Fame as his career stats shows he should be considered.

Matt Ryan definately improved his chances of being drafted by the Ravens at #8 or maybe higher if they trade up to get him

Guess who needs to draft a quarterback now? This potentially opens up great trade possibilities with teams who may want to jump ahead of Baltimore for Ryan if he's available at 7.

I'm surprised he didn't wait until after the draft to announce it.

That's true, but it's a matter of when the Ravens felt they would need to find one. Now that free agency is over, there are fewer options, and they'll most likely need to look to the draft, which potentially limits them in the draft.

Take the Pats cornerback situation - I'll wager that the Pats don't feel they need a cornerback desperately for this season because they can get by with 1 year free agents, so they're not pressed to draft one early. If Baltimore felt they could squeak by with McNair for another year with him, they wouldn't be nearly so pressed to draft one.

Of course, if they feel that Boller has seen the light, this is moot.

According to ESPN his 2008 salary was $4M, so that is what will go away. Doubles their cap space. Of course it also likely means they really need some sort of semi viable veteran presence behind a draftee and one of and Boller/Smith.

The only memorable thing in that SB (other than the last play) were the plays he made on that final drive, which were some of the greatest in SB history. For 2 or 3 years he was great, but the injuries didn't let him sustain it for long enough to be considered for the HOF.
