Hey folks, I hope you're keeping safe and well. Mods, forgive me if this is in the wrong place, from memory though we've always had topics in the main forum for the big non-NFL sporting events. Please move if necessary :)

So, the big game. An all-English final; Pep Guardiola's Manchester City reach this stage for the first time (and likely not the last) whilst Chelsea are here for the third time in their history.

It feels like City will finally get their hands on the trophy that Pep, and no doubt City's UAE ownership, has craved the most, and the trophy that City brought Guardiola to the club to win.

Standing in their way though is a good Chelsea team brimming with talent, experience and a recent track record of beating Man City - City won the league encounter in January at Stamford Bridge, however Chelsea have since beaten them in the FA Cup semi-final in April and then followed that up with a win at the Etihad Stadium in the league just three weeks ago.

I think many expected City to be playing this game, but few would have backed Chelsea after they fired Frank Lampard mid-season. They hired the wily german Thomas Tuchel in his place though and he's tightened them up somewhat and brought some organisation to a team that lacked it badly.

City are on a roll this season though - they've won the Premier League at a canter and have taken all of their opponents apart in Europe. It's been their's and in particular Pep's achilles heel in the last few years and many would accuse the spaniard for trying to be too cute and over-think things with team selection and formation. They've not had the problems this season though that they've had making many believe this is finally the time when they get their hands on the premier club trophy in world football.

Interesting selection ahead of the game though by Pep - he's left out departing superstar striker and City legend Sergio Aguero, as well as back up Gabriel Jesus, deciding instead to go with the out of form Raheem Sterling in the so-called 'false 9' position. He's also opted to leave out the defensive minded Rodri and Fernandinho in midfield and opted to go with a more attacking trio. It's been Pep's biggest flaw - will it pay off?

Chelsea go with the team many expected although I'd have preferred to see Reece James at right wing-back. Big night for Timo Werner who cost a lot of money last summer and has struggled to live up to the billing. That forward trio can cause problems and Chilwell is dangerous from that left side.

Kick off at 8PM UK time (3PM Eastern).

Seems there are many fans into the stadium
A few thousand, good to see. Fans were only allowed back into stadiums in England for the last game of the season last weekend.

An eventful first 23 minutes - Chelsea very much on top and really should be 2-0 up. Easy chances fell to Timo Werner, and he fluffed his lines.

City might have been in with a ball over the top to Sterling between those, but Reece James got back and then Mendy crowded him out.

The main thing for City here is they've deployed Kevin De Bruyne as the middle of the three man front line with Foden deeper and Sterling on the left.

As I type, big chance for young Phil Foden but a terrific sliding block by Antonio Rudiger stops him from putting City 1-0 up.

Good game. Sure, Werner had a couple of opportunities, but City have been dangerous too. Could be 2-1 to either side. From an England point of view, neither Sterling nor Stones fill one with confidence.

A microcosm of everything wrong with modern day football...

The real competitors...
A UAE sovereign wealth fund that mocks financial fair play vs Putin's oligarch bestie who had his own apartment in the Kremlin while bribing his way to riches.
Compelling choices

Thiago SIlva looks like he might need to be replaced here.

Thoroughly agree with the above

Thiago Silva off and replaced by Andreas Christensen. His lack of pace against City's front players would worry me. Would have brought Zouma on

1-0 Chelsea!

They've deserved it. They're looked to be little danger as Chilwell picked the ball up on the left, he played it inside to Mason Mount, who has probably been the pick of the players in the first half, he got his head up and picked out the german Kai Havertz moving from the inside right channel and he takes it round Ederson and knocks it into an empty net.

Great goal
1-0 Chelsea
Havertz

The more you see that goal, the worse it gets defensively for City. Player of the season Ruben Dias absolutely all at sea.....

Half time in Porto and Chelsea go in deservedly ahead.

Chelsea have had the ball a lot in the areas where Rodri or Fernandino would usually occupy. Ilkay Gundogan is world class, but he's not a ball winner and Chelsea have pressured him and played round him. He's not got near Mason Mount, apart from to foul him and pick up a booking.

Heck of a game
Great to see end to end action vs bus parking
Werner fascinates me.....can't buy a goal unlike last year in the Bundesliga where he couldn't miss

As a LFC supporter....Go Chelsea, the lesser of two evils
Fek Pep

Second half underway.

Text book tackle from Kante on Kevin De Bruyne.

Huge blow for Manchester City, Kevin De Bruyne is blocked off by Antonio Rudiger and they clash heads. Rudiger is okay to continue and booked for his troubles however Kevin De Bruyne, after a period of incapacitation on the ground, has to come off. He's replaced by Gabriel Jesus, so at least City have a striker on the pitch.
