The Patriots pulled off a rare single-game trifecta in this beatdown of Gang Green. For the first time in franchise history, the Pats (a) had a quarterback throw four touchdown passes; (b) finish with a perfect passer rating; and (c) three other players finished with two touchdowns. Harold Jackson, Horace Ivory and backup RB James McAlister each had two touchdowns, while Steve Grogan went 15-19 for 281 yards, four TDs, no turnovers, and a 158.3 passer rating.

(That feat was repeated once again in 2010, when the Patriots defeated Detroit 45-24. That was a day where Tom Brady tied a franchise record by going without an interception for the sixth straight game and had his second career perfect passer rating. Wes Welker, Deion Branch and BenJarvus Green-Ellis each had two touchdowns, and Brady had four touchdowns along with the perfect rating.)

Back to this game: the utter and complete annihilation of the Jete was actually worse than the final score would have you believe it was. The Patiots led 21-3 in the first quarter, 41-7 at halftime, and 48-7 after three quarters. Most of the Jet points were scored in garbage time, when the Patriots had emptied the bench to let everybody play by the fourth quarter.

At the time this broke a 1961 team record for the most points scored, and was just the second time in franchise history that the Patriots had scored 50 or more points. The record stood for just 11 months, as the patriots put up 56 points against - of course - the Jets, on Sept 9, 1979. To this day this 55-point output still stands as the fifth most points scored in the 66 years of the team's existence.

For Steve Grogan this was one of three times that he threw four or more touchdowns - and they all came against the Jets.
* Four TD, 15-19, 281 yards, 158.3 rating in this 55-21 victory on Oct 29, 1978
* Five TD, 13-18, 315 yards, 153.9 rating in a 56-3 victory on Sept 9, 1979
* Four TD, 11-18, 180 yards, 134.3 rating in a 42-20 victory on Dec 13, 1987

The Patriots scored touchdowns on each of their first seven posessions, which is an NFL record - tied by the Pats in 2007 against the Bills. The Patriots also scored seven consecutive TDs versus Tennesee in 2009, but that was on possessions #4 through #10, in the second and third quarter.

Grogan, Patriots Bombard Jets, 55-21
Quarterback Steve Grogan of the New England Patriots said it was "like rolling dice and it kept coming up a seven for us." Grogan's hot hand produced 15 pass completions in 19 first-half attempts for 281 yards and four touchdowns in a 55-21 breeze past the New York Jets yesterday.

It was the Patriots' sixth straight victory and raised their record to 7-2 as leaders in the AFC East.

The Patriots shocked the Jets by scoring 21 points in the first quarter and went on to roll up 529 yards of total offense. They scored touchdowns on each of their first seven possessions and threw only two passes in the second half.

Harold Jackson caught five passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns, and tight end Russ Francis also caught a scoring pass.

The Jets tried to run the ball on the Patriots, who came into the game with the No. 1 rushing defense inthe American Football Conference. New York gained only 104 yards rushing, and when quarterback Matt Robinson went to the pass he hit only eight of 20 attempts for 72 yards.

The Jets managed only 276 yards of total offense. New England kept the ball away from them by running off 64 plays to the Jet's 61. The Jets are 5-4, their winning streak ended at four games.

The Patriots marched 65 yards with the opening kickoff, then went 65, 42, 76, 41 and 86 yards for touchdowns in the first half. They staged another long drive for a touchdown the only time they had possession in the third quarter.

Grogan set the tempo on the first play of the game. He faked a pass into the right flat, then tossed a screen shot to Sam Cunningham, who went 30 yards for a first down at the New York 35.

The Patriots then turned it into a rout. The Jets were not only embarrassed, but physically hurt, five players were sidelined with injuries.

New York also lost offensive lineman Darrell Austin, who was ejected with New England tight end and special teams player Don Hasselbeck for a slugfest in the second period, after New England's fourth touchdown.

Grogan, given outstanding protection by his blocking strikes of 11 and 28 yards to Harold Jackson, 30 yards to Stanley Morgan and 11 yards to Russ Francis. The quarterback was 15-19 with two of those incompletions dropped by his receivers. Grogan also set up Horace Ivory for two scoring runs in the second period as he picked apart the Jets' defense with his aerial blitz.

The Patriots mercifully called off the horses in the second half. Grogan engineered an 88-yard scoring drive without throwing a pass in the third period and then gave way to backup quarterback Tom Owen in the fourth quarter.

At that point New England led 48-7.

Owen, a five-year pro, made his first, regular-season appearance since Oct. 18, 1976, while Grogan's iron-man strength was broken. Grogan had gone the distance in 30 consecutive games.

Nobody has been burned more often by Grogan than the Jets. . . . .

The Best of Grogan includes these memorable performances:

--Grogan rushes for a career-high 103 yards, including a 41-yard run, as the Patriots rout the Jets, 41-7, on Oct. 18, 1976.

--Grogan completes 15 of 19 passes as the Patriots overwhelm the Jets, 55-21, on Oct. 29, 1978.

--It gets worse the following season; Grogan passes for five touchdowns and 315 yards as the Patriots humiliate the Jets, 56-3, on Sept. 9, 1979.

--On Oct. 11, 1981, the Jets manage to hold on and beat the Patriots, 28-24, but only after Grogan comes off the bench as a third-quarter replacement for Matt Cavanaugh and passes for 330 yards.

--In a 23-13 Patriots win over the Jets on Sept. 18, 1983, Grogan’s career-high completion percentage of 81.8 on 9-of-11 passing is overlooked because of Tony Collins’ 212 yards rushing.

This was Mike Holovak's third game as head coach, who had replaced Lou Saban after a 2-3 start. Both teams entered with three wins and three losses, with Dallas coming off a 38-7 loss to the Oilers, and the Patriots upbeat after defeating Buffalo 52-21. This game was the first half of a home-and-home series between the two clubs, with Boston also winning a week later at Nickerson Field by the score of 28-21 on Ron Burton's 91-yard kickoff return.

One thing that Holovak continued to do that Saban had instituted, was the practice of calling plays from the sideline. But unlike Paul Brown's famous method of sending plays in with a guard, Holovak did the same by alternating quarterbacks. In this case Babe Parilli and Butch Songin would confer with the head coach, go in for a play, then return to the sideline. This was highly unconventional, as quarterbacks traditionally called their own plays on the field, not coaches on the sideline.

The Patriots struck first on a 49-yard fumble recovery for a second quarter touchdown by Don Webb, but Hank Stram's Texans came back and controlled the second half. With 4:57 left to play Dallas scored on a 24-yard pass play, where Chris Burford was double-covered by safeties Fred Burney and Ron Hall, but while between them managed to take the ball out of both their hands for the score to put the Texans up 17-7. The Pats responded quickly, with Parilli completing a 13-yard pass to TE Joe Johnson, HB Ron Burton gaining 45 yards on a pass from Songin, flanker Jim Coloclough going around left end on a reverse for another 16 yards, Songin completing a 4-yard pass to Johnson for the TD. The four-play drive used took just 1:43 off the clock, and then when Cappelletti lined up for the extra point, Parilli pulled the ball and ran it in for a two-point conversion. With 3:01 left in the game the score was Dallas 17, Boston 15.

Billy Yates' kickoff went into the end zone, Abner Haynes foolishly ran it out, and was tackled at the 12-yard line. Defensive stops by Rommie Loudd and **** Klein forced a three-and-out, and the Pats took over on their own 38 with 1:36 left to play. Parilli got the drive going with a 9-yard pass to Johnson, and Songin hit Gino Cappelletti for a gain of 18. On the next play it was Parilli's turn, connecting with Gino for a gain of 11 to the 16 yard line. That left just enough time for Mr. Patriot to kick a game-winning 24-yard field , and a one-point comeback victory.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, two early season losses to the New York Titans when Saban was still the head coach doomed the team. As a result Boston finished one game behind Houston in the AFL East, and in an era long before the concept of wild card playoff teams, the Oilers went on to defeat San Diego for their second straight AFL championship.

DALLAS, Oct. 29 (AP) -- Gino Cappelletti kicked a 24-yard field goal as the final gun sounded today to give the Boston Patriots an 18-17 victory over Dallas in the American Football League.

Raise your hand if you remember Greg Davis or Eric Sievers.

Davis was a Pats kicker for nine games in 1989, who missed two of his five field goal attempts in this game - but kicked the game-winner in overtime. He connected from 47 yards in the first quarter, 48 yards in the fourth quarter, and then hit a 51-yard field goal in overtime for the win. It was a bit of a reprieve for Davis, who missed a 46-yarder at the end of regulation.

The Pats dominated statistically in a game with eight lead changes to upset the Colts, who were favored by 6½. Steve Grogan went 28-46 for 355 yards, and #2 TE Eric Sievers had seven catches for 113 yards - two yards short of his career high - to lead the New England offense.

The Patriots held a 30-19 advantage in first downs, outgained Indy in total yards 448-357, and controlled the ball for 16 more minutes, 43:05 to 26:52. Two turnovers, going 5-14 on third down, settling for field goals and then missing those kicks kept the game close. On defense Vincent Brown had a strip sack and fumble recovery to set up a field goal, Gary Jeter and Brent Williams each had a sack, and Johnny Rembert (seven tackles) forced a fumble on a hit on Andre Rison that was recovered by Fred Marion to stop a Colts' drive.

Patriots' 51-yard Field Goal Topples Colts In Overtime
Greg Davis, who missed a 46-yard field goal at the end of regulation, kicked a 51-yarder with 5:03 left in overtime, lifting New England to a 23-20 victory today over Indianapolis. The Patriots started the winning drive from their 12 after a punt. Steve Grogan, who passed for 355 yards and one touchdown, was driven back to his 4 on a sack, but he hit three straight passes that brought the Patriots to the 44. Five straight runs took New England to the Colts 33. After Grogan recovered a fumble on the snap for a one-yard loss, Davis made the winning field goal.

Davis had field goals of 47 yards in the first quarter and 48 yards in the final period. The 48-yarder snapped a 10-10 tie early in the fourth quarter, but the Colts drove 56 yards on the next possession after James Pruitt returned the kickoff 39 yards. A seven-yard touchdown pass from Jack Trudeau to Mark Boyer put Indianapolis on top, but Grogan completed six straight passes the next series before John Stephens's one-yard score with 2:22 to go.

Pruitt returned the next kickoff 48 yards, and eight plays later, Dean Biassuci's 39-yard field goal for the Colts again tied the score. Grogan, making his second start of the season, had a string of 13 straight pass completions snapped on the next series, but a 17-yarder to rookie Hart Lee Dykes took New England to the 29 before Davis missed as time expired.

Rookie Andre Rison, who had six receptions for a career-high 129 yards, scored the first Indianapolis touchdown on a 22-yard catch in the first quarter. Grogan, who hit 28 of 46 passes, both career highs, tied the score at 10 with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Cedric Jones late in the third quarter. New England twice threatened in the second period but got nothing. A 38-yard field goal attempt by Davis was wide, ending his streak of eight in a row.

The Patriots pulled off a rare single-game trifecta in this beatdown of Gang Green.

* Four TD, 15-19, 281 yards, 158.3 rating in this 55-21 victory on Oct 29, 1978
* Five TD, 13-18, 315 yards, 153.9 rating in a 56-3 victory on Sept 9, 1979
* Four TD, 11-18, 180 yards, 134.3 rating in a 42-20 victory on Dec 13, 1987

Tom Brady threw three touchdown passes, two to Julian Edelman, as the Patriots cruised to their seventh straaight victory. At halftime Willie McGinest was honored for his induction into the Patriots Hall of Fame. On a side note, I had forgotten that Dan Campbell's first head coaching gig was with the Dolphins.

The team didn’t play its best football on Thursday. The Patriots weren’t dazzling, but they were still dominant.
Playing their second game in four days against a team coming off of two blowout wins, the Patriots showed why they’re the best team in the NFL, earning a decisive 36-7 win over their division foes. The Patriots improved to 7-0 for the second time in franchise history.
If there was anyone who wasn’t affected by the Thursday night game, it was Tom Brady. The Patriots have now scored 30 or more points in six straight games as the captain of this ship was outstanding once again.
The 38-year-old finished 26-of-38 for 356 yards and four touchdowns. It was the 69th game in which Brady threw for more than 300 yards in his career, the third-most all-time. This was also his 24th game with four or more touchdown passes, also the third all-time.
Dion Lewis, back after missing last weekend’s game, caught six passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. Rob Gronkowski hauled in six receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown. Julian Edelman grabbed two touchdown passes to go with 81 receiving yards.
Even more impressive was the defense. With the Dolphins coming off blowout wins over Tennessee (38-10) and Houston (44-26), Ryan Tannehill didn’t throw any touchdowns and was intercepted two times.

It took the Patriots 4:48 to score the game’s first touchdown. Unlike last week, with a pass-heavy offense, the Pats used a balanced attack to open up the game with four run and four pass plays. LeGarrette Blount was having early success and in his return, Lewis picked up a big third-down conversion, taking a Brady pass for 16 yards. But the biggest play of them all belonged to Gronkowski.
The tight end scored a 47-yard touchdown with 10:21 left in the first. Gronkowski caught a Brady pass on the left side of the field, bounced off one defender and got a great block from Brandon LaFell (on Michael Thomas) as he sprinted untouched into the end zone to give the Patriots a 7-0 lead on the game-opening drive.
The Patriots took a 9-0 lead in the most unusual of circumstances with 14:05 left in the first half. After getting pinned at the 9-yard line by Ryan Allen, things got worse for the Dolphins. On third down, Mike Pouncey snapped the ball when Ryan Tannehill wasn’t ready. The ball rolled into the end zone and out the back, as the quarterback tired to corall it, for a safety.
The defense stepped up again with 14:31 left in the game. This time Duron Harmon came up with an impressive interception, diving to hand Tannehill his second pick of the night. The safety returned the turnover 30 yards to give the Patriots the ball at the Miami 15. Three plays later, Brady had his third touchdown pass of the night, a 10-yard strike to Edelman to make it 29-7.
On the Pats' next drive, Brady hit Edelman in the end zone again. The 16-yard touchdown marked Edelman’s sixth of the season, which tied a career-high, and gave the Patriots a 36-7 lead.

9/9/79, was my first Pat’s game at Schaefer Stadium (I’m a native NYer), I was 16, turning 17 about a month later. I got to see the Pats win 56-3 that day.

What a game, they scored a TD on all EIGHT of their drives that day. TD Bombs by Grogan to Stanley Morgan (2) & Harold Jackson (3) , TD runs, just everything worked. Even Tom Owen had a TD Pass. Just a day I’ll never forget. My parents were Jet’s fans, my dad swore people were throwing cigarette butts at them, I don’t remember that.

Patriots improve to 6-2, Chargers drop to 3-5

New England only scored one touchdown, but after giving up an 87-yard run the defense was stout, forcing punts on five of the next six Charger possessions. Jonathan Jones sealed the victory with an endzone interception on the final play of the game after Philip Rivers had guided the Chargers down to the Pats 23 yard line. It was Jones' first career NFL pick.

The Patriots started the season 6-2 or better for the 16th time in team history. Tom Brady threw for over 300 yards for the fifth time in eight games, and threw 30-plus completions for the fourth time in the season. Dion Lewis opened the game with a 71-yard kickoff return, Brandon King was credited with a safety when he tackled Travis Benjamin in the endzone on a punt return, and Rex Burkhead set personal career highs with seven receptions for 68 yards.

The only touchdown came in the second quarter on a two-yard pass from Brady to Rob Gronkowski. That pushed Gronk past Tony Franklin into fourth place on the teams' all-time scoring list with 444 points. He also passed Heath Miller on the NFL all-time receiving yardage list for tight ends, into 11th place with 6,604 career yards.

This was also the first time the Patriots had played the 'Los Angeles' Chargers since 1960, after 56 seasons in San Diego. Here we are eight years later and I still find myself often referring to them as San Diego rather than LA.

Tom Brady passed for 333 yards and a touchdown, Stephen Gostkowski added four field goals to help the Patriots (6-2) hold on for the victory, their fourth straight.

The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Chargers.

New England got its lone touchdown via a 2-yard toss from Brady to Rob Gronkowski in the second quarter. The Patriots went 1 for 4 in the red zone, but were able to cobble together the Gostkowki field goals and a safety. The defense, which gave up 30 or more points three times in their first four games, has given up just 51 points total over its last four. And it did it this time without linebacker Dont'a Hightower, who sat out Sunday's win and expected to miss the remainder of the season following shoulder surgery.

Los Angeles (3-5) got on the board first when Melvin Gordon found a seam on the outside and rumbled down the sideline for an 87-yard touchdown run . But the rest of the game was marked by Los Angeles' mistakes and inability to move the ball offensively.

The Chargers cut the Patriots' lead to 18-13 with 8:30 to play following a 24-yard touchdown pass from Philip Rivers to Travis Benjamin and failed 2-point conversion pass. They got the ball back a final time after New England added Gostkowski's fourth field goal. But Rivers' pass with 1 second remaining was intercepted at the goal line by Jonathan Jones.

Los Angeles' mistakes were highlighted in a wild way in the second quarter when Benjamin muffed a punt inside the Chargers 15, recovered it and retreated all the way to own goal line while trying to reverse field. He was corralled by a Patriots group that included Brandon King, Matt Slater and Jones, then finally wrapped up by King and tackled in the end zone for a safety.

Rivers had a similarly head-scratching play early in the third quarter when he rolled to the outside to escape the pass rush, but had the ball slip out of his hands for a fumble. He recovered, but the play resulted in a 20-yard loss and a sack credited to Kyle Van Noy.

Grogan was the QB when I was a kid and always personified toughness and skill. He’ll always be one of my favorite Pats.

This was the game where I became a Pats fan. So great. It was a miserable rainy Sunday in late October and this was the first full NFL game I ever wateched. Right then I became a Pats fan. Little did I know that the next 20+ years would be so hard. But this is also what made the Brady Belichick years so good.

Patriots improve to 6-2, Bills drop to 2-6

The Patriot defense held Buffalo to just six points, on two field goals. That marked the 30th time under Bill Belichick that the Patriots held their opponent without a touchdown.

LB Kyle Van Noy forced a fumble on a 7-yard sack that was recovered by S Patrick Chung. With that play the Pats had at least one turnover in each of their first eight games of the season. The Patriot defense also recorded an interception for the eighth straight game with Devin McCourty's 84-yard pick-six in the fourth quarter.

Tom Brady improved to 29-3 against Buffalo. Those 29 wins were a record for most wins by a quarterback against any single team. Bill Belichick earned his 100th victory against a division opponent, becoming the third coach (Don Shula, Tom Landry) to hit the century mark in division play. In addition James White had ten catches, making it the fourth time time he has ten receptions in a regular season game - in addition to the 14 he had in Super Bowl LI.

Devin McCourty returned an interception 84 yards for a touchdown, and the New England Patriots’ defense smothered the Buffalo Bills’ anemic offense in a 25-6 win on Monday night.

James White scored on a 1-yard run, and the Patriots relied more on Stephen Gostkowski’s leg than on Tom Brady’s arm for their fifth straight win, which improved their AFC East-leading record to 6-2. Brady finished 29 of 45 for 324 yards, but was held without a touchdown pass for the first time this season.

Gostkowski hit four of five field-goal attempts, including two from 25 yards after New England drives stalled inside Buffalo’s 10.

McCourty sealed the win with 5:54 remaining by intercepting Derek Anderson’s pass over the middle intended for LeSean McCoy and taking it to the end zone.

Two plays before the pick, Bills tight end Jason Croom’s diving one-handed touchdown catch was negated following a video review. Replays clearly showed Croom never had possession in attempting to make the 25-yard catch, which would have made it a one-score game.

Brady finished 29 of 45 for 324 yards, but was held without a touchdown pass for the first time this season.

Brady continued his string of career-long dominance over the Bills by improving to 29-3, extending the NFL record for most wins by a quarterback against one opponent.

The Patriots beat Buffalo for the seventh straight time and improved to 32-5 in their last 37 meetings under coach Bill Belichick.

Patriots drop to 2-5-1, Jets improve to 5-1-1

This was the season when the Pats had to begin the year with five consecutive road games, due to Fenway Park not being available thanks to the Red Sox unexpectedly playing in the World Series during the Impossible Dream season. As a result the Patriots were playing on the road for the sixth time in their first eight games.

The Pats jumped to a 20-7 lead on a John Charles 35-yard interception return, a 16-yard touchdown pass by Babe Parilli to Gino Cappelletti, and two Cappelletti field goals. An Emerson Boozer 2-yard run got the Jets to within 20-14 at the half.

The third quarter was all field goals and left the teams tied at 23 entering the fourth quarter. Then Broadway Joe hit Pete Lammons with a 7-yard touchdown pass with 5:53 left to play, and Jim Turner kicked the PAT. In their final drive Parilli was tripped by Jet George Atkinson on fourth down, falling two inches short of a first down, and the Pats turned the ball over on downs to give the Jete their fifth win of the season.

The Patriots rallied to score two touchdowns by Curtis Martin in the fourth quarter, but poor punts by Pat O'Neill gave the Panthers good field position one too many times in a battle of two-win teams. O'Neill averaged 32.4 yards on his eight punts, including boots that had a net of 29, 17, 28, 16, 22, 16, and 22 yards, the final setting up the game-winning field goal. A Dave Meggett fourth quarter fumble on the Carolina four-yard line didn't help matters either. With the win the Panthers became the first expansion team to win three consecutive games - and walked away with a better record than the Patriots.

Pats résumé: one season, 12 games (3 starts)

Cindrich tied a team record with 16 unassisted tackles in his first NFL start, on Dec 3, 1972 against Miami. He played in the NFL for four seasons, then spent 40 years as a sports agent.

Born October 29, 1965 in Rome, Georgia; hometown Atlanta, GA
Patriot kicker, 1989; uniform #5
Signed as a Plan B free agent (Falcons) on March 9, 1989
Pats résumé: one season, nine games

Davis beat incumbent Jason Staurovsky for the placekicker position during the 1989 training camp, after spending the full previous season with Atlanta. He was perfect on close (3-3 from 20-29 yards) and long (2-2, 50+) field goal attempts, but not so well on midrange (6-9 30-39, 5-9 40-49) attempts; in addition he missed three of his 19 PATs (81.3%). After a 27-26 loss to the Jets where he missed two field goals, the Pats released Davis on Nov 15, 1989, and re-signed Staurovsky. Davis bounced back and ended up having a 12-year NFL career, kicking 224 field goals with seven different teams, primarily the Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals, from 1987-1998.

Happy 66th birthday to Steve Clark
Born October 29, 1959 in Chattanooga, TN; hometown Columbus, Ohio
Patriot defensive lineman, 1981-82; uniform #65
Selected as a 5th round (130th overall) draft pick in 1981, from Kansas State
Pats résumé: one season, seven games; 1½ seasons on injured reserve

Clark was plagued with injuries, first to his left knee as a rookie, then an ankle injury in a 1982 preseason game resulted his spending that entire season on IR. To add insult to injury, the one year he did play he had to endure the 2-14 Ron Erhardt season, then a nine-week player strike the following year.

Happy 29th birthday to D'Angelo Ross

Signed on May 2, 2019 as an undrafted rookie free agent, from New Mexico
Pats résumé: three seasons, three games (one start)

The 5'9 defensive back spent most of his rookie season on injured reserve, and most of the next two years on the practice squad. He appeared in three games in 2021, getting 60 snaps on defense, 31 on special teams, and making three tackles. Ross was also a practice squad elevation late in 2022, but did not see any action in that game. He is now with the Houston Texans, appearing in 13 games in 2023, 10 games in 2024, and three games thus far in 2025.

Happy 87th birthday to Mike Long
Born October 29, 1938; hometown Marlborough, Mass.
Patriot flanker/end, 1960; uniform #87
Signed as an undrafted rookie free agent on February 1, 1960, from Brandeis
Pats résumé: one season, two games

Mike Long has the distiction of being the one and only pro football player that played his college football for the Brandeis Judges. The elite afluent Waltham school discontinued its football program in 1960 due to high costs, difficulty recruiting players against a large number of bigger Boston area colleges, and a preference to expand their intercollegiate activity in other sports.

Long also has the distinction of playing in the first regular season game in AFL history, and the first win in Patriots franchise history, with a reception in both games.
