Rob Johnson was originally traded to be the starting QB in Buffalo in 1998. After he got injured and Flutie had success getting his own cereal (Flutie Flakes), they were forced to stay with Flutie. The Bills weren't exactly lighting defenses on fire in 1999, but when Johnson thrashed the Colts in week 17, Ownership allegedly forced Phillips into starting Johnson. It was not a meaningless game for the Colts as they were fighting for the #1 seed with Jacksonville. This is what gave Ownership false hope on Johnson. Flutie had been doubted his entire career because of his height and that he lacked a powerful arm. Johnson had all the intangibles GM's liked in a QB. Ownership doubled down in 2000 and Johnson was named the starting while Flutie was recovering from a groin injury. Johnson got injured yet again and Flutie went 4-1. When Johnson was ready to return, Ownership once again benched Flutie. They kept Johnson and cut Flutie after the season. Lol.There was more going on there than we’ll ever know. Flutie was the full time starter the entire season, went 10-5, then sat out a meaningless 16th game.
He was benched for no known reason whatsoever for the playoff game and stayed on the bench despite how horribly the team played. It is quite reminiscent of the Butler situation.
Tennessee really wasn't that good of a team in 1999, but got very favorable matchups. The first game was against Buffalo who they would've lost to had Flutie played. Johnson was awful throwing for 131 yards and got sacked 6 times, but McNair was even worse throwing for a whopping 74 yards. Then they had absolutely no business beating Indy and got the perfect matchup in Jacksonville who they already beat twice in the regular season. They were very similar to the 2011 Giants who had no business making the playoffs and the 2012 Ravens. Both of them weren't good teams either, but got help along the way Giants (regular season) and Ravens (playoffs) to advance to the Super Bowl.
