NY Village voice Jets article (link great read)

It's not about the future of the franchise, it's about management wanting to fill seats and sell jerseys (i.e. - increase revenues) and the coaching staff trying to save their jobs...THIS YEAR.

EXACTLY! This is what I was saying to friends the day they made the trade. This is a marketing machine in action with a new stadium being built and luxury boxes to sell. They bought 'hype' or perhaps 'relevance' is a better word. They are in an ALMOST no lose situation. Brett Favre manufacturing enough wins to put butts in seats and generate false hope is the primary directive in NY.

A Super Bowl win would be gravy.. or icing... or a gravy bowl filled with icing!!

They were a horrible team last year due to the fact that they had no left guard, right tackle or nose tackle. If you can't see that they upgraded this team in 3 offseasons from what they were then your blind.

I think teams are how they perform. Drafts might be perceived to be strong, but that means nothing until these players actually play and win games. It's simply not the case that the Jets were a bottom feeding team before Mangini got there--they were simply part of the pack, and were a FG away from the AFC championship game during that period. If you think you have to be "blind" not to see how superior they are now, that's fine--you're a fan, fans get excited. But if this drastic improvement translates to 8-8, I'm hard pressed to see how the Jets don't remain exactly what they were. A middle-of-the-pack, just another team. I guess we'll see.

Clemens isn't the answer, or isn't ready, so what's the harm in bringing in a better QB? Much of the New England fan base was calling for the same thing to happen here, albeit for the backup QB position, in case Brady got hurt.

I agree 100 %. I posed this question before the Favre trade was made. If our QB of the future is not on the roster how are we stunting the growth of a future QB if we done have one? I have quiet faith that Brett Ratliff could be a player in the future. In 2 plus years the kid has turned himself from an undrafted QB to a kid who displayed good pocket awareness, arm strength and accuracy. It was against 2nd and 3rd stringers but his camp and preseason combined have me cautiously optimistic.

The Jets are "drastically improved?" How many games did the Jets win last year? I'd wait a little bit before making sweeping statements like that. Wishing something doesn't make it so.

All of this is on paper but from last years team we upgraded from Vic Hobson to Calvin Pace, Dewayne Robertson to Kris Jenkins, Chad Pennington to Brett Favre, Adrien Clarke to Alan Faneca, Anthony Clement to Damien Woody and no FB to Tony Richardson. On paper that is a massive improvement.

I think the SB isn't the goal of the Jets (not that they would mind). For them, I think they can say they were successful if they simply make the playoffs. To go from 4-12 to making the playoffs, in one season? That would be an amazing feat.

I hate the Jets, but I like Favre. He was a dink with his return this year, but what was he supposed to do, shut up and not play? The Packers should have given him his walking papers sooner.

Back on topic, the original article sets the bar way to freaking high. Playoffs=success.

I agree with everyone saying this is narrowly fiscal thinking on the part of the Jets. But I say that about Kraft sometimes too (e.g., the design of the stadium), though not about the design of the team.

What you're stunting is the development of any semblance of an offensive system and/or disciplined players to form it's core. Unless the system Eric has been trying to build there on offense was never more than just do what you do and hope it's enough...and if it isn't we'll try something or someone else next season.

That's why we haven't brought in a veteran to replace Brady, we're going to rely on the system/foundation to carry the team through. What are you gonna rely on in 2009 or worse 2010 when Brett's finally content mowing the lower 40? Same thing you've been relying on since Eric took over from Herm who took over from Groh who ran for the hills just a year after he took over from Tuna after BB said no thanks who ended Rich Kotite's 2 year run that followed Pete Carroll's one year gig... jeez, and that's just the last decade. 40 years of nearly unabated mediocrity doesn't happen for nothing... It happens because you never invest the time an effort to build a foundation.

Peter King is on WEEI now and they're talking with him about the situation in Tennessee. He is reiterating how the decision to draft Young was owner driven - by an owner from Houston who resents the hell out of the Texans and what he feels was done for them to become franchise owners in his home town while he had to buy a team in another area. And how he took the guy all his country club cronies in Houston wanted the Texans to take. And how beating them matters more to him that anything else that happens all season. Sounds familiar...

Isn't the Village Voice a gay publication? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Have to go with Mangold on this one,I think the Jets have improved over the last two or three years, how much remains to be seen.Favre is certainly a stop-gap ,how much he contributes over the long haul will be interesting. If he continues to hurl those desperation
throws around the end zone,he's gonna make a few ,and get picked off a lot when the coverage is better.

MoLewisrocks,

Thatt was a great post!!!! Thank you.

Two Words: Brett Ratliff, I think he can be our QB of the future. What your basically saying is we should have just stuck w/ Clemens or Penny b/c they are more familiar with the offense then Favre probably will ever be. Correct?

Ok, but don't you think saving the $$$ and keeping Penny (and some players happy) for another year to add to all your new toys would have been a safer bet to up the number of W's?

I have a feeling that at the end of the year Chad has more TD's and less Picks than Brett.
