It's not about the future of the franchise, it's about management wanting to fill seats and sell jerseys (i.e. - increase revenues) and the coaching staff trying to save their jobs...THIS YEAR.
They were a horrible team last year due to the fact that they had no left guard, right tackle or nose tackle. If you can't see that they upgraded this team in 3 offseasons from what they were then your blind.
Clemens isn't the answer, or isn't ready, so what's the harm in bringing in a better QB? Much of the New England fan base was calling for the same thing to happen here, albeit for the backup QB position, in case Brady got hurt.
The Jets are "drastically improved?" How many games did the Jets win last year? I'd wait a little bit before making sweeping statements like that. Wishing something doesn't make it so.
I agree 100 %. I posed this question before the Favre trade was made. If our QB of the future is not on the roster how are we stunting the growth of a future QB if we done have one? I have quiet faith that Brett Ratliff could be a player in the future. In 2 plus years the kid has turned himself from an undrafted QB to a kid who displayed good pocket awareness, arm strength and accuracy. It was against 2nd and 3rd stringers but his camp and preseason combined have me cautiously optimistic.
Two Words: Brett Ratliff, I think he can be our QB of the future. What your basically saying is we should have just stuck w/ Clemens or Penny b/c they are more familiar with the offense then Favre probably will ever be. Correct? What you're stunting is the development of any semblance of an offensive system and/or disciplined players to form it's core. Unless the system Eric has been trying to build there on offense was never more than just do what you do and hope it's enough...and if it isn't we'll try something or someone else next season.
That's why we haven't brought in a veteran to replace Brady, we're going to rely on the system/foundation to carry the team through. What are you gonna rely on in 2009 or worse 2010 when Brett's finally content mowing the lower 40? Same thing you've been relying on since Eric took over from Herm who took over from Groh who ran for the hills just a year after he took over from Tuna after BB said no thanks who ended Rich Kotite's 2 year run that followed Pete Carroll's one year gig... jeez, and that's just the last decade. 40 years of nearly unabated mediocrity doesn't happen for nothing... It happens because you never invest the time an effort to build a foundation.
Peter King is on WEEI now and they're talking with him about the situation in Tennessee. He is reiterating how the decision to draft Young was owner driven - by an owner from Houston who resents the hell out of the Texans and what he feels was done for them to become franchise owners in his home town while he had to buy a team in another area. And how he took the guy all his country club cronies in Houston wanted the Texans to take. And how beating them matters more to him that anything else that happens all season. Sounds familiar...
