Well, a little bit anyway...

"We've suggested to the Labor Committee and the commissioner that we scale that back and take that money and give it to the veterans. We're still going to spend the money, [but] we think it's a misallocation of resources and actually can cause problems in your locker room when a young guy who has never played a down is getting paid more than some of your vested veterans.

"On the other hand, we don't plan to be picking in the top 10, unless it's through doing good trades. Maybe it's good we let it continue that way for our competition."

He didn't sound grumpy to me. :bricks:

Re: Nice Old Unca Bob Kraft gets... edgy?

Even Bob Kraft should know that ANY team is one key injury from getting the top pick in the draft.

I disagree with you. I believe you could take any one player off the Patriots this year, and they would not be the worst team in the league.

Including THAT player? Matt Cassell hasn't started at QB since high school and I don't think we have the shut-down defense that would carry him.

I think that if it happened we would run the ball effectively and who ever would be left throwing the ball on 3rd and shorts. We would still make the playoffs.

Since moosekill specifes that we will not be the 'worst' team in the league, I agree with him even if 'that' player is out, we might find ourselves better than a handful of other teams...

OF COURSE Kraft realizes that...what he said was this..."On the other hand, we don't plan to be picking in the top 10, unless it's through doing good trades."...the KEY word is PLAN..and he is 100% correct in what he said.

Without THAT player we won't be drafting in the 30s, but we might not be drafting in the single digits either.

But I think folks are reading too much into what Kraft said. He was advocating a policy change that makes sense for the league, even though at the moment the current situation actually favors his team. He ended the the statement with a light hearted comment to that effect.

Kraft also is one of the leagues biggest proponents of measures that allow small market teams (such as the Bills) to compete on equal footing with large market teams, even thought the Pats are a large market team.

Often you have folks advocating positions that would directly benefit their team right now, regardless of the effect on the league as a whole, when a GM advocates a position that would not benefit his team but would help the league as a whole it should be noted, because it adds credibility to the argument.

Exactly right. You have Polian and Kraft, associated with the two teams LEAST likely to draft in the top five, advocating the same change.

I'm not a Polian fan, and think he abuses his power to change rules to favor his team, but in this case he is right. And so is Kraft.

Kraft is also right in that the current system helps the Pats because it hogties the worst team with top-heavy rookie contracts, of which at least a third of which will never be worth the money paid.

It is absolutely nuts to pay a rookie more than Brady or Manning.

With the O'Connell pick, I think the Pats have a better plan for staying out of a potential top pick than with Cassel, IMO

I think that is obvious...
