NFP: The Agent's Journal

I read this earlier and thought it was great.

You have to wonder what the agents tell these kids. Every year there are around 100 players or so whose names get mentioned on some mock draft as a #1 pick. Brandon Siler was listed as going to the Pats at #28 in 2007 on a prominent mock a few days before the draft, and he fell all the way to the 7th round. Darnell Bing was a popular mock choice for the Pats in 2006, and he went 4th round. A lot of these kids never have a realistic shot at making the 1st round, and they must be devestated due to unrealistic expectations.

The 1st round money is obscene, particularly for the top 10. It's killing the game and ruining the intent of the draft. It's nice for the Pats, since we keep picking up great players for reasonable money, but if the intent of the draft is to allow weaker teams to get better then the league needs to figure out some way not to strangle them with ridiculous guaranteed money.
