If after 4 Quarters the game is tied a "Field Goal Shootout" commences.

Only the kicker is on the field, the refs. It is a 55 yard field goal. Team one kicks... if it's good.. Team two kicks.. is theirs is good, it repeats.

Conversely if team one misses, team two has a chance to win on their kick, but it they miss, it still continues.

Totally fair, a winner will be decided pretty quickly. And frankly it would be kind of fun.

I'd prefer to decide the outcome of a football game by playing football. If it's a tie after 5 whole quarters, then it's a tie. 75 minutes of football is plenty. I like it as it is!

The NFL has done enough to fix things that were not broken, now we have something that barely resembles the sport we all grew up and love

Thanks for the idea, but ill pass

This. Don't get why people hate a tie or two a year so much. Seems like some silly macho "there must be a winner and a loser" thing, except the thing people get mad about almost never happens.

or if you would rather, hoops/rings are setup, roughly 30 yards from mid field.. both teams QBs begin a "shootout" of throwing to the ring. Same basic rules and premise as the FG shoot out.

The previous OT method was lame. Sudden death in football was always dumb. The current method, the game should not end if the possessing team gets a TD. The other team should get a chance to match the TD.

I still want to see trapdoors that randomly release hungry carnivores... or maybe randomly-triggered springboards...

perhaps an obstacle course is quickly erected for the skill players to complete a various events for 15 minutes? There would be pre-arranged neutral judges to score the extra frame?

They could add random trap doors throughout the field that players can fall in to as well, not necessarily for deciding OT contests but just as a general entertainment value type of thing.

Right... but it might be nice to have tunnels connecting them, so the players could re-enter the field at a point of their choosing.... Upsized pinball bumpers would also add a dash of flair, don't you think? Or better yet, the mobile bullseyes they used in those QB challenges. Run them across the field on every offensive snap.

I would add one twist. Add a bidding war. The ref starts at 70 yards, goes down one yard a time. First team to bid get to kick first from the yardage in the bid. If they make it, they win. If they dont make it, 2 yards gets knocked off, and the other team tries, if they make that, they win. If its a miss knock off 2 yards and the first team tries for the win again....

If you are going to have a kicking contest, might as well make it interesting!!!!

Yes. I think so as I read this. Also, perhaps some kind of Whack a Mole mechanism to the whole matter as players are attempting reentry to the field of play.

One coach spots the ball anywhere they like, and then the other coach decides whether to take the ball or to defend. Then sudden death.

So I'm guessing the ball would typically be spotted somewhere near the 7 yard line - might depend on the relative strengths of the offense and defense.

Quick, simple and completely fair (except Belichick would have his normal edge). And it's actual football once the spot has been made.

This idea was posted to Drew Magary's mailbag column on Deadspin this week...you could at least give him a little credit. Unless you were the one who sent it to him, in which case, well done.

how about we have a goodell kicking contest? Place goodell at the 35, and the team that kicks him the farthest wins.
