1. Connor Barwin
2. Larry English
3. Clay Matthews
4. Clint Sintim
5. Cody Brown

Outside Looking in:
Cushing - supplement/roid flags
Brown - size/fit issues
Orakpo - He's a DE and will go too high anyways
Maybin - Boom or bust, weak against the run
Johnson - More boom or bust, but has ideal size for Pats system

I think I'd put E. Brown over C. Brown, and I like English better than Barwin, but that's just me. Good list.

I think that Barwin and English would play different roles in the 34, though. Barwin is more of a defend the run/cover guy, while English is more of a pure pass-rusher. As it stands, we already have Thomas, Crable, Woods, TBC, and Redd. These guys are all more dedicated pass-rushers with an ability to set the edge against the run. None of them, aside from Thomas, have much coverage ability. So from a needs perspective, I think Barwin is a better fit for our defense right now, even though I think English is fantastic.I love how violent his hands are; he's just relentless.

Some amazing stats on Barwin from CBS Sports:

“Barwin made 50 of his plays vs. the run, holding the opposition to minus 15 yards (-0.30 ypc), the lowest rushing yardage total allowed by a Bowl Division defensive lineman in 2008 … Also stopped ball carriers at the line of scrimmage for no gain on seven of those carries … Thirteen of his hits came on third-down running plays, collecting six stops inside the red zone, including four on goal-line plays … The Bearcats ranked 28th in the country and third in the Big East with a 112.92 pass defense efficiency rating … That was thanks to Barwin, who allowed only 2-of-32 passes targeted into his area (6.06 percent) to be completed for minus 11 yards (only player in college football to hold an opponent to minus yardage during the 2008 season) … Made 21 of his pass play stops on third-down snaps and also delivered six fourth-down hits.”

That means Barwin is phenomenal against both the run and the pass. Unlike most college DEs, he can drop into coverage effectively. He’s not just good or great, but truly elite according to those numbers. Oh, and he led in sacks his first year on defense. I guess he get to the passer, too. I understand not wanting a one-year starter in the first, but if he’s available at 34, he’s a potential steal.

I still like English better, though . . .

Thanks for that tidbit on Barwin. English comes in second place for me, but I won't be disappointed if we end up with him. If the guy is in my top 5 I think he's a pretty good player.

Tully Banta Cain ? Pierre Woods ? Crable ?

You suggesting we can upgrade at OLB ? Wow. Blown away.

Good Lord. Just think what BB could do with him. . . .

Oh, believe me, I am.

If we come out of this draft without Barwin, I will be seriously depressed. As much as I like English, I think he duplicates skill sets we already have.

Yes, Barwin is a pigskin seeking missile with a MIRV warhead - air, land, surface, subsurface, transdimensional, it doesn't matter, he finds the football and makes plays. As Pappy Yokum would say, "I has spoken!"

I think we wont even draft a pass rusher. We dont even blitz as much.

LOL, are you kidding? We didn't blitz much last year because we didn't have the personnel to do it. In each of the Pats Superbowl winning years, their defense averaged over 40 sacks per season.

2001 41 sacks
2003 41 sacks
2004 45 sacks

compare to

2008 31 sacks

QB Pressure is a key component to championship D.

I like Johnson's size and athleticism as I noted above, however he never dominated at the college level or showed the consistency you'd like to see despite his superior physical tools. I think he's a risky pick. We'll see soon enough who BB likes the best.

Very nice list. I'd agree with it, except that I think you have Cody Brown rated too high, and I think Maybin has the greatest upside of anyone other than Barwin - I think he'll be good, but it will take 2 years. And you left out Robert Ayers, who I prefer at SILB (as I do English) but who I think is probably my 3rd favorite LB candidate after Curry and Barwin. I'd probably go:

1. Connor Barwin
2. Robert Ayers
3. Larry English
4a. Clay Matthews
4b. Aaron Maybin
6. Everette Brown
7. Clint Sintim
8. Michael Johnson

How come everyone says the same thing about Michael Johnson each time? It's like we're preprogrammed robots, eh?

How's this: as an athlete and fitness buff (I train in parkour, gymnastics, rock climbing, capoeira, etc), I know a little something about movement, body control, and coordination. When I watch MJ, I see someone who hasn't finished growing into his frame yet. He hasn't lived up to his potential because he's still physically immature. Give him another year or two to fill out and become more comfortable in his body, and I think he will be much more coordinated, explosive and, yes, productive. He is, in fact, the only athlete in this draft that I would consider as a consolation prize in place of Barwin. Who knows? He may even be better one day.

And for those rumors that he's not good against the run? Check the stats of how many yards opponents averaged when running at him. He's better than most of the other 43 defense ends in the draft. So hyped for so long, he's had his game picked apart, and now he's actually undervalued. I would be quite happy with picking him, as I think he's got the potential to become a Peppers type player, but with more fluidity in space.

Take that, ya naysayers.

Mayo, I have Ayers going as a 4-3 rush DE in the mid 1st to teams like the Redskins etc. who need a rush DE. I'm not sure Ayers can handle the transition to LB although others might be more confident about this projection. He's about 20 lbs too light to be a 3-4 end, and he has looked slower when gaining weight over his usual 270.

Call us back when he makes All-Pro.

Haha. I'll stick by my claim . . . no one's gonna remember when I'm wrong.

Yes we will. And we'll never let you forget it.
