Moss Fiasco makes Belichick look good

He reestablished the Patriots in the mold of what they once were: a team of mostly good players whose whole was greater than its parts. Remember when they refused to be introduced individually at Super Bowls?

The arrival of Moss in 2007 was a brilliant move in itself (the rebirth of the supposed faded star), but it transformed the Pats into a juggernaut, something they were never called even as they won three titles in four years.

Maybe no one fears the Patriots like they did, but 6-1 is 6-1. When you’re looking down on the league, it doesn’t matter how you got there

Along the way Belichick has reaffirmed his iron grip on the franchise. Winning this power play increases both his authority over the players and their confidence in him. If Childress is a testament to a coach being led around by his stars (notably Brett Favre(notes)), then Belichick is, as much as ever, the guy no one wearing a helmet dares to cross. On a lesser level, that point was again illustrated when the Pats won their test of wills with holdout offensive lineman Logan Mankins(notes), who finally reported to the team Tuesday.

Great analysis!

Very good article!

And yes...... no one will ever want to play chicken with Belichick.

The best thing about the Kraft/Belichick model is that no player can hold the team hostage. You see that with most teams; of course there are exceptions.

Is there hope for the cowboys without Romo? (As opposed to a winning season without Brady) Vikings lose Rice. (We're 3-0 without Moss) Heck, we don't have Mankins, Bodden, Ty Warren, Faulk etc. And we got to the AFCCG with Caldwell.

In the salary cap era, we've managed to assemble a team of many B+ players rather than having a few A+ players and mixing in C players. Our mantra is clearly, you're only as good as your weakest link. I wonder who that is? Connelly? Arrington? Wilhite? That's pretty good then.

Interesting to compare and contrast him to Childress. First there is how he has handled Brett Favre - last pre-season, this pre-season, and in games when Favre has overruled Childress. Then there are the various comments this past week: bringing up signal stealing, then backing off and saying he hoped he could have a team like the Pats someday, etc. And all that's before the decision to acquire, and then release Moss.

Randy Moss is gone, but Vikings coach Brad Childress still has some big problems - TwinCities.com
Vikings coach Brad Childress acted alone, so now he stands alone in the Randy Moss fallout.

Childress, who has contractual authority to shape the 53-man roster as he sees fit, did just that in unilaterally deciding Monday to waive Randy Moss, much to the chagrin of ownership.

He did not consult with owner Zygi Wilf or team President Mark Wilf, who returned to their commercial real estate business in New Jersey following Sunday's game at New England.

Nor did he consult with anyone outside football operations, which rankled the Wilfs, according to a person familiar with the situation.

"They were not happy with the decision but more so the process," said the source, who spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity. "These guys are lawyers. They're process people. Part of the confusion is that there is no clear conformity within the organizational structure. And that's flawed."

Accountability in the Moss affair rests with football operations, but the power lines are blurred. Vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman lacks a general manager's title and authority. His responsibilities generally start and stop with the draft. Rod Brzezinski, vice president of football operations, has the primary duty of managing the salary cap.

That leaves Childress totally in charge of personnel and making the decisions about which players to acquire and which to jettison, with virtually no accountability to management or the public.

"The structure we operate under is flawed, and when you have a flawed structure you get the kind of Keystone Kops atmosphere that's out there now," the source said.

Childress is signed through the 2012 season, and there is no buyout clause in his contract. If he is fired, the Vikings would owe the balance on his deal, which is valued at between $4 million and $5 million per season.

Ownership isn't the only Vikings branch with qualms about Childress.

According to three people close to the situation, Childress has issues in his locker room because of his rigid ways of running a franchise. That might explain the departure of Moss, who is not one for controlling after outstaying his welcome at four different stops during his 13-year career.

Now today Childress says the decision to acquire Moss was a "bad decision" - though he doesn't say anything like 'it was my fault' or 'I accept responsibility' the way certain other coaches do.

I just saw the "bad decision" quote in an SI article. Talk about stating the obvious - heave a 3rd round pick out the window and potentially put yourself on the hook for a significant salary for a 4-week rental? Pure genius.

Nice article. Every now and then a media person gets it.

Just like a lot of them didn't get the championship seasons because the Pats weren't blowing anyone out.

Not only does BB look good. It certainly is a strong endorsement of whoever does the catering in Foxboro.
