Merged: How Moss trade effects offensive scheme

The other funny side effect is now that there is no Moss it will be even easier for the Jets secondary to shut down the Pats passing attack. Yeah I'm in stitches over here.

Here come Brandon Tate and Edelman. Defense are really worried now..

don't forget, hernandez and Gronkowski....welker, woodhead, BJGE....omg!!!!!! they are doomed, I tell yah, doomed!!!OMG!!!!!!!!!!

- Tate will run routes/plays that Moss can't Bubble screens, slants, digs etc...
- Moss was coming off the field in most blocking situations, i.e. screens, runs etc... and that defenses would quickly key on this.

I will admit that Moss looked really bad on a play in the Miami game where he ran a short route and was supposed to block. He didn't sell the route at all and basically gave the play away by weakly blocking the corner. I think it was a screen.

Troy Brown and Mike Lombardi both made statements that the Pats offense will be better without Moss.

Both made similar points and here they are:

- Moss only runs 3 routes which have a positive affect for the offense but limits how dynamic they can be.
- They need to find ways to get Tate the ball more he is an impact player
- Tate will run routes/plays that Moss can't Bubble screens, slants, digs etc...
- Moss was coming off the field in most blocking situations, i.e. screens, runs etc... and that defenses would quickly key on this.
- And that Moss wanted out and was pushing every button he could with BB to force his way out and that in fact Moss did fly home with the Pats and was openly complaining about the fact he didn't have any catches in the game (this came from Troy).

That is it in a nutshell. Remember don't shoot the messanger. My take for a 4th round pick we got the greatest single season by a WR, and two more very good years out him and then turned it into a 3rd.

I will also add that Moss' failure to consistently run out the routes was problematic. Brady's 1st INT in the Jets game was exactly because Moss started to pull up just as Brady was winding up.

Still you have to question to what extent Moss' shortcomings on the field offset his big play ability and the respect he got from defenses because of it.

Re: The Pressure is off Brady now

There is a lot of wisdom in the quote below. I hope you all remember that some of us have been complaining that Brady sometimes acts as if Moss were the only receiver on the field. Now he'll really have to look for the open guy, instead of counting on a Moss miracle catch, which happened only occasionally.

Yes, every word out of Brady's mouth is pro-Pats, pro-Krafts, pro-teammates, pro-team. He embodies every aspect of this organization...and since the new contract....he is carrying the kool-aid like never before. But if you closely examine his relationship with Moss, it has been very clear that Brady has paid special attention to Moss the player, Moss the ego, Moss the vulnerable.
I strongly believe that Moss is very aware his place in NFL history today....and where he wants to be on the totem pole when his career is over. And I believe that Brady felt an enormous responsibity to maintain Moss' numbers....and who can argue with the results. But with this responsibity, one could argue that achieving Moss' numbers has been detrimental to the team at times. Was it a big deal for Brady to be emotional advisor on the sidelines last year during the few games where Moss' output was marginal? Was it in the best interests of the team when Brady was forcing throws to Moss vs the Jets this year, in order to prove that Revis can't contain the future Hall of Famer?
We have all seen Brady's recent 4th quarter numbers....not good. We have all watched Brady have those ugly moments, firing into triple coverage, usually in Moss' direction. Head scratchers?
Now as the dust settles after this trade, Brady has been relieved of the one burden on his shoulders that has gone against the Patriots Way....padding stats. From here on out, Brady will will be firing the ball to a bunch of minimum wage freshman and sophmores, and Wes Welker, who exemplifies hustle and hard work. Back to the days of 7 players making catches, spreading it around to the open guy. I for one loved the Pats no huddle vs Miami. Brady taking charge using all his options. Reminded me of the Weiss offense....keep 'em off balance and their heads on a swivel. Let Brady be Brady again.

Rich Gannon made that point. He stated that in games he has studied he sees Moss not crossing the safety on front side runs that would take him out of the play. Along with a few other comments but he basically said guys will see that in the film room and start to question it, especially young guys. Essentially he said you can't have 10 guys doing it one way and 1 guy doing it another.

I'm sure someone said this already but i think the offense will become more of short to intermediate.

The drives will be longer like we saw against the fish monday night.

This will have the added benefit of Keeping the Young Defense off the field

The Patriots have been using a LOT of 2 and 3 TE packages this year. And rightly so - the TEs have been great. I expect the # of snaps for Hernandez and Gronk to go up. So there's really no need for a lot of 3 WR sets. Tate and Welker are your starters. Edelman is the #3 guy when necessary. Price will give us what he can when he can. If nothing else, he is a good blocker on runs, screens, etc.

Based on Reiss' stats, we've only used 3 or 4 WR packages on about 35% of the snaps this year. I expect that number to go down a little.

Miami - 19 out of 58
Buffalo - 27 our of 68
Jets - 21 out of 61
Cincy - 23 of 62

To quantify some more what I was saying - Tim Graham's blog:

Patriots' O moved away from Randy Moss - AFC East Blog - ESPN

Says there are 19 teams who have used 3 or more WR sets more than the Pats this season, and compares that to last year.

Good thing we have Crumpler, Hernandez and Gronkowski not to mention Woodhead-he might be able to line up and catch some dunks.

Good luck in Minn. Randy.

Re: what every coach in the NFL is now thinking....

Next teams will do this

Single our outside guys. bring both safeties in and play them 1 shallow and 1 high in the middle to shutdown TE and Slot receivers. Also these safeties will provide run support.

I'm not as pessimistic. I think Tate has the speed to stretch the field and give Defensive coordinators concern about leaving him in single coverage without deep safety help. If corners play off of him, he should be open for quick outs.

Price is a big fast kid. I think we will see Price - BB usually has something in his pocket.

Tate is comparably fast, both he and Moss appeared to run the real life version of the madden-Posts ( I wont pretend to know the route name intricacy ) in the Buffalo game, and Tate was there in just as much time as Moss, only Tate slowed down on arrival because it was already a cluster **** of defenders (and the ref).

NFL Videos: QB Brady to WR Moss, 35-yd, pass, TD

I LOVE how PFF says this:
There’s a lot of talk about the coverage Moss draws. “Doubled every play,” etc. But the bottom line is that he doesn’t draw any more or any less coverage than most receivers. Going deep against a Cover 2 or 4, you are going to get covered by two players. That’s not unique to Moss, that’s just how the coverage works.

That would be the 8 route.

What is wrong with what they wrote? Cover 2 (Tampa) is predicated on a safety playing deep 1/3 with a Corner underneath. Cover 4 is normally reserved for extreme 3rd and longs or prevent defense. But there is nothing wrong with what they said. Its the truth.

Cover 1 is where Moss demands that deep safety to come over the top to him or "roll" to him. But very few teams play a true cover 1. The majority of the teams in the league are in some form of cover 2 the majority of the time.

Elements of the Moss Trade:

1. Freakish ability/ tall/ strong arm/ can jump/ speed.
2. Great hands.
3. Stretches field but seldom stretches before games.
4. Resume: Key figure in the 2 highest scoring offenses ever.
5. Draws double coverage, which often allows room for WW and others to operate.
6. Last year of contract – week 5 and counting.
7. Slightly unstable/ has insecurity issues, which manifests itself in being indifferent at times, taking off plays, saying stupid things, does not take criticism well, can react negatively to adversity etc.
8. Insecurity issues leads to QB pacifying him and forcing the occasional ball.
9. Poor blocker.
10. 33 going on 40.
11. Addition by Subtraction Effect: Other players will step up, Price may get some playing time, Offense will be less predictable as Brady will spread the ball more.
12. Bipolar swings can affect teammates.
13. Compensation: most likely a mid to mid high 3rd round draft pick.

Factoring the elements of the trade the Patriots come out ahead 99 percent of the time. Randy remembers to take his Zoloft the other 1 % of the time.

You expect a rookie who played zero snaps and was on the inactive list all season long to come in and start for us at WR?

How's Danny Woodhead, undrafted free agnt, cut by the Jets, working out for us?

Umm, just because Welker plays in the slot when we spread the field doesnt mean he isnt one of the WRs out there in 2 WR sets and always has been.
Tate and Welker are the WRs.
2 TE, with Hernandez and either Gronk or Crumpler with 2 WR and 1 RB is our base offense now.
When we spread the field and go '5wide' that has almost always included Faulk and a TE (because it makes the D match up for 3wr, RB, TE) so Welker Tate, Edelman with Hernandez and Woodhead will be the typical set.
Price will get some snaps as a backup. We have never had a 4th WR get much play in this offense, the only time 4 WRs were productive was when Stallworth started out as the #3 and Gaffeny took the job away mid season.

The guys who get the extra PT in this are:
1) Welker because he has been held out to a degree early on
2) Tate because he will play in all situations now
3) Edelman who has not had many chances this year. Now he will get them
