Mayock dissects Brady-to-Tate

I really like the way Mayock goes about breaking down plays.

Just shows how good Brady is and Tate reallly finished the move off nicely too. Nice to see Favre rave about it too. Although I see somebody here couldn't even give him credit for that.

i agree, tate looked so slow running that, kinda like moss before we got used to him

but the db's were NOT gonna catch up

looking at the play i assume it was a designed deep ball to tate, why else have welker running deep routes against a teams #1, #2 CB???

makes no sense, not unless he was supposed to attract the deep safety, and then tate was supposed to go deep, but got held up with the jam, and saw the scramble, so this play ended up happening

Agreed.

Because Welker was even with Winfield, doesn't mean he is open. It was a low percentage pass with the shorter Welker attracting the safety over top.

So with that said, why even have Welker run a deep route against Winfield? Because he had Winfield off the line?

Part of me believes this wasn't a busted play but rather a designed play. My only adjustment to the play would had been to have Gronk get into the flat and dump the pass off to him with Winfield and Williams 30 yards down field.

When Favre was talking -- and maybe this is just me -- I felt like he was waiting for someone to ask, "Did he remind you of you?"

Earlier this week I complained because Deion Sanders on NFLN gave Brady no credit for the scramble -- "when you give a guy all day like that he'll find someone." Huh? Seemed like an odd analysis. This makes up for it.

I got a hint of that as well. Personally, I thought when Favre said "..I can't help but laugh".. I felt as though it was extremely condescending.

On Brandon Tate's touchdown catch, is he taught to come back when a play breaks down like that or is that instinct?

BB: The play broke down.

Good video. Couple points though.

Welker was even with his coverage and was going to beat him, but you can see that the deep safety was cheating that way. If Brady let it go, it would probably have been a 2 on one situation. Welker is good but with his size would probably be low percentage.

On the scramble play one interesting detail. BB pointed out on WEEI was that during a scramble situation, the first thing the receiver does is to break off his route and come back. However, BB gives out this detail that, if the QB pumps in his direction, it means that he is covered and he needs to break on the second option, which BT decided to break upfield. Brady after the pump probably needed to buy himself and BT more time so decided to run back a bit, do his spin move and then make the throw.

Nice breakdown by Mayock. I don't understand why Welker is the receiver that's going deep in that play. He's quick, but doesn't have the top end speed to really separate when he's going vertical against most CBs. Seems to me that Tate should have been running Welker's route in the first place.

I thought it was funny that Favre commented on that play. That's the type of play that's made his career.

Tate is great!

Like Moss, it looks like he is running slow because he has long legs and doesn't need to take as many steps as someone like Welker, but in reality he can run with anyone in this league.

It was all Brady on that one, welker is quick he aint fast so it wouldn't have made sence for him to throw the ball his way, especially with winfield.

I'm pretty sure it would have made perfect sense, Welker throwing his hand up indicates he was confident he was going to get by him, which he did. There was only 2 receivers on the play and Welker was the first read. Whether Brady wasn't confident he could step into it with the pressure coming (Welker hand goes up right when Gronk loses his block) or he didn't want to risk a long pass there I don't know but it definitely would not have been a bad decision to throw to Welker.

Welker goes deep from time to time and I'm sure sometimes it has to do with reading the coverage and route adjustment. Welker had his man beat, he knew there wasn't enough time for the DB to turn and run with him that's why his hand went up. A good throw there and it's probably a Welker TD. Brady for whatever reason felt that checking for the safer option was the better play. It worked out in the end but I'm not convinced that Brady wouldn't throw that pass to Welker most of the time in that situation.

Anyone know the down and distance on that play?

I agree with you about Favre. Wow. I can really see why, once again, he is such a fan favorite. He's one of those rare guys who combines character (or great ability) and personality.

Hey, nice detail. I can see that; Brady clearly looks right in BT's direction after the spin move. Tate even says "I saw the fake" and went. And that was a heckuva move Tate made to cut upfield.

On the Tate comment: Interesting he said Brady told him just the previous week what to do if that happened. It seems you always hear that from players under BB after a key play in a key situation: "Coach/whoever went over that with us this week." Situational football; gotta love it.

BB: The play broke down.

I believe they are instructed to come back, but Brady told the receivers if it happened to 'get free'. I seem to remember reading that somewhere.
