Patriots [team stats] running back Laurence Maroney [stats] had offseason shoulder surgery that revealed “fairly significant damage,” according to a league source, though the long-term impact is unclear.

This doesn't sound good, but if he can make a full recovery, then no harm no foul - and it would explain even more his ineffectiveness in the post-season.

Can't tell much from that although if it were career threatening I wouldn't think he'd have been playing in the last games.

Never can tell, pain is supposed to tell you the extent of the damage, until you find the nerves got tweeked and are sending false signals.

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

One of the more dissapointing things so far of the offseason.. Still its still some grey area..

If we draft a RB ...
suspect the worst.

Or if Dillon re-signs during TC or right before the season.

If Brian Leonard was selected I wouldn't read too much into it. He's not the quintessential every down back you're looking for. Now if Marshawn Lynch were to fall and we pick him up at #24.... Panic!

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

Ahum, ahum, . . . . .Michael Bush, ahum, Kenny Irons. Depth, depth. I said this before, the Patriots will draft a running back in this draft, and in my eyes the earlier the better. It's not a knock on Maroney's ability, it's a depth issue. We have none at that position. We need another guy that can carry the rock 20 times a game if called upon to do so. . . . . .

So you don't want a back-up running back? Read into what? The potential of an injury to Maroney is just icing on the cake. We need another running back. KFaulk's days are numbered and Morris is a nice player, but no feature back.

What? First, I didn't say we're fine at RB if Maroney can't make it. I also never said that I disliked Leonard. I'm just not sure Leonard can be a 1st and 2nd down RB in the NFL. In the next level, I think he's more of what we want G. Mills to be.

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

I agree that if the FO drafts a RB early, it doesnt mean maroneys season is done for or his career is in jeopardy. We need more depth at the position and if the BVP at the time appears to be RB, then we'll take em.

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

Guess we can finally put to rest that Maroney was not what he should have been the second half of his rookie season. His injuries were more significant than they first appeared, maybe that was his reason for being so upright. Give him credit for putting on the pads.

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

i gave a speculation when i showed a picture of him with the brace on

d%#*!@t. Well on the upside,at least this would explain some things and we hope he can make a full recovery. He's a tough runner and therefore likely to incur injury along the way.
I assume (hope) the Pats were thinking back-up RB in the draft anyway so they may go as planned on that. Could this change the Dillon situation, though?

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

Even if this is serious, there isn't a RB in the first round that I would feel good about taking.

There are decent ones in the 3rd round that would be a better risk to take.

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

I hinted to this the other day, but Lynch might fall to 24....

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

thank god its not a Knee which is sure to affect a RB...also we never know as after a surgery he might comeback by TC....so on one knows. We might get a RB or we do have Hill in the rooster [signed before AFC champsionship for 2007] maybe he will get a shot.

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

Did Dillon & his agent, aware of the situation with Maroney, put NE's feet to the fire leading to his eventual release?? They could have refused to restructure or at least insisted on more than NE was offering.

That said, IMHO, no way would they have let C Dillon get away if LM's prognosis was anything other than favorable.

If not Cory, then wouldn't they have been actively pursuing a FA #1 running back to some extent?

Or will we indeed go for insurance in the draft?

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

We only released him a few weeks ago, the front office knew about the Maroney thing by then (I'm sure they did, there's nothing in the article to suggest this just happened). If looking into bringing Dillon back was necessary they wouldn't have released him in the first place.

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

If we were to draft Lynch I wouldn't think it would mean much. After Dillon's huge 2004 we would have picked Stephen Jackson had Wilfork not been there and still looked into trading up for Kevin Jones.

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

Also, don't forget this article is by Tomase, the king of speculation.

I wouldn't read to much into this. They basically say what ever was wrong, it was serious enough for surgery, but they don't say what exactly was wrong, and this is just a "league source". League sources initially had the info wrong on Harrison, Bruschi's wrist, and a number of other things. Hopefully Maroney will be fine.
