It's difficult to fault Mangini for accepting the offer. It's a huge risk on the jesters' part though.

If Bates is the replacement, here is his resume - bold is his years with Belichick in Cleveland in which he coach DL, LB and Secondary and different times :

COACHING BACKGROUND:

Year College/Pro Team Position Coached

/Defensive Line
2000-04 Miami Dolphins Defensive Coordinator
2004 Miami Dolphins Defensive Coordinator/
Interim Head Coach (7 gm)
2005 Green Bay Packers Defensive Coordinator

FYI, MIA Defense rankings while Bates was DC:

2000 #3
2001 #11
2002 #4
2003 #3
2004 #20

Also, GB's D was #20 in 2005. (And Saban improved MIA slightly to #15)

So when he actually has some talent to work with Bates has a pretty solid resume. (Unless you want to attribute the success of Fins D to Wannstadt. )

I'd be more than happy with him as DC.

Edit: To add that Miami D was #19 in 1999, the year before Bates.

Well color me surprised! I never thought that EM would make the jump so early. I agree with earlier poster - here's hoping that we can get a few coaches that will stick around for awhile!

Equally, or more, important is the Dolphin players really responded to Bates and liked him when he was the head coach.

Good for him. Sucks to lose him to a divsion rival though. Business is business. Should be a really interesting off-season.

I'd REALLY like to see Bates added.

Not only is Bates VERY experienced but he also has ties to BB and is very likely the best man for the job. Not that Pepper, Pees, Ryan and the others aren't capable themselves but Bates' resume is very impressive.

Another reason I like Bates is because Bates might afford BB some stability at the DC position that one of the young pups wouldn't give him. How so? Bates is getting up there in age (59 years old IIRC). With all of the HC openings currently out there, and so few qualified people to fill them, if Bates can't get a HC job this offseason, he'll likely never get one. This might intrigue BB quite a bit knowing that if he re-hired Bates he'd have some stability at the DC position for some time if so desired.

My biggest worry is that Bates follows Sherman wherever he goes as HC. Hopefully that's not to Buffalo as has been rumoured.

If Belichick wants him, I would imagine that Bates would prefer to come to NE than follow Sherman. He has a much higher chance of success . . . and he might even find himself a hot HC candidate this time next year

Haslett's going to end up in Buffalo. I'll take Bates. He seems fine and I liked the fire he had when he was HC of Miami for those 7 games.

Locally the word is it's between Sherman and Haslett.

Apparently Haslett's on his 2nd interview with the Lions and an offer might be forthcoming.

Has anyone heard what time the press conference is tomorrow ? I'd like to set my VCR to tape it, just interested in what he says.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter thinks **** Jauron has a shot in Buffalo.

Sherman to Buffalo would also work out well for the Pats as it would ensure the continued mediocrity of a divisional rival like Mangini will in NY.

He stays here, maybe 2 or 3 years. The Pats have one of the top D's in the league those three years. He can then write his ticket to where he wants to coach.

The real sucky thing is that he didn't really give us time to develop the next DC. One more year would have been nice. Someone earlier said BB might be DC, and hire an OC for 2006. This rings true in some ways.

It will be weird having like the whole BB coaching tree in our tiny 4-team division!

Meanwhile, Miami currently has a stable of stud coaches. Unbelievable all-star cast, including what's-his-face from San Diego. Miami will make the playoffs in the next year or two. (of course wild card behind us!)

Funny you mention Crennel and Weis because they're the exact opposite of Mangini. Those two willingly paid their dues for DECADES and learned their craft.

Do you have any proof for either of those guys turning down HC jobs in order to "willingly" pay their dues?

If anything, those 2 guys are proof that even if you are a great veteran assistant you may wait forever for you chance and if you turn down the job now.

Does this now mean we refer to Mangini as Man-gina?

give me a break. the guy did a great job. Why else is he now a head coach?

agreed, he performed admirably considering what he had this year, and the D performed very well in the playoffs. Good luck to you EM...

...besides knowing Belicheck like I do, would'nt you think he already has some people in mind for next year...his wheels are always turning....

Ohh, and Porter, just shut up and do your talking through your play on the field boy...the ref knows it, we all know it, it was a blown call, move on, you're still in the playoffs....and good luck by the way..

re:

I bet when Belichick found out he wasn't even worried or pissed off at all. He probably smirked, knowing how Mangini wasn't ready yet.

Mangini and the Jets will be bottom-dwellars for the next few years while BB and Saban battle it out for the AFC east crowns.
