It's great to watch what the Patriots are doing this week, picking up young players who went high in their drafts but didn't pan out immediately as expected with their original teams. Already the youngest AFC team to ever compete (and win) a Super Bowl, the Patriots got younger with these moves.

Michael Hoomanawanui is 27-years-old.

For a 6th rounder in 2016 and Hooman, a good player who became expendable due to depth at his position, the Patriots picked up two front-seven defenders under 26 who can learn from the incumbents. Neither player excelled where they were because their teams are sub-par to begin with, each thrown directly into the fire to produce right away. 1st rounders can sometimes do that, but the NFL is unforgiving when a young player doesn't adjust right away to the speed and complexity of the NFL.

Bostic and Hicks will be given the opportunity to play in situations for which they are suited, and learn from veterans who have been in the playoffs and won a Super Bowl.

The two lost draft picks in 2016 seem like they are becoming less important as the Patriots take steps to prevent getting older and slower with moves like this. They could have jumped at guys like LeSean McCoy, Frank Gore, Andre Johnson, etc. But they stayed the course, now adding younger players with room to develop.

I guess I don't see how Hicks helps in 2016. He is only signed through this season.

With regard to Bostic, the situation is different. Bostic (and long with Freeny) will have a year to learn the role of base linebacker. While we don't play base all that often, they will be good options in that role should Mayo go (as is likely).
