Lombardi on SB 51 comeback

It's hard to say, he's a tough guy to understand. I don't want him to retire anytime soon, but in a way I'm looking forward to his retirement assuming he'll open up or write a book giving us a look behind the curtain.

Hes already done a few books w/ Holley that go behind the scenes. Halberstam as well.

I think BB is very much in tune with his legacy, football history and documenting it.

I'm sure once hes done with the game he'll work with a writer to get it all down.

Lombardi is the best BB interpreter and BB and fans can only be happy about it. Every genius appreciates good interpreter of his work.
Unbelievable elocution, economy of expression while being comprehensive and wit. He makes the most complex things easy to understand, exciting and fun. Great asset amidst empty live media frenzy.
Id guess BB enjoyed his company a lot.

I had also read somewhere that Lynch had been only 1 for 5 that season at converting 1 yard line TDs.

Add onto that the mic'd up for that play showed Carroll clearly excited when he looked onto the field and he yells "They're in goal line, they're in goal line!!" yes, new england had not lined up in goal line with 3 dbs all season long - - who WOULDN'T have fallen for that?

For those reasons, I think it is an unfairly maligned playcall.
Carroll's reaction is what convinced me that Belichick had baited him into that call. Pete took the bait, and Malcolm landed a big one. The more I hear about the 3 DB design the more it confirms Bill won that game for the Pats.

Just to be more specific. Another reason why it was the right call to try a pass at that point was Lombardi was right. That play probably would have gone nowhere, simply because of the numbers.

In that GL formation with 3 wide outs, the Pats had 8 defenders on the LOS against 7 for the Seahawks (8-1 for the QB). Take that and the fact of Lynch's previous failures in that situation, PLUS it was the best down to pass, since everyone was thinking it was going to be a run.

BB baited SEA to throw it since they had never seen our GL formation with 3 CBs. Knowing what we know now, what would have been the best play if we were in their (SEA's) shoes? The box was stacked up the middle, and we had the 3 CBs to match their 3 WRs.

Would it have been to run play action involving Wilson, with quite possibly Wilson running it in himself on some type of creative boot leg with zone blocking?

Good point about the two point conversions - not much talk about them.
Each conversion was virtually must have or lose. The Patriots executed both like there was no doubt they would succeed (even though the reality of converting two 2 point conversions in a row is very much an uphill affair).

What else really hits home in the interview that few fans and very few media dopes consider: the nuances of the personnel package and how these package looks can give pause to and shape the opposition's play call.

That would have been the safest play given that they still had another time out in case Wilson was stopped short of the endzone.

Says the second two point conversion was a play they had run earlier that had been blown up for a three yard loss. Took some guts to call it again!

Also some very interesting insight (beginning at the 1:57mark) into the Malcomb Butler int in SB 49 and how it may not have been such a good idea for Seattle to run the ball on that play after all.

Guts? More like stupidity. Glad they got away with it, but Josh is a stubborn moron.

I get the 1-5 on goal line but to run a pass play that they hadn't run all season? Dumb.

I've tried very hard to give Pom-Pom the benefit of the doubt but the play call was stupid.

The Seahawks used that pass play many times in that situation. It was the Pats defense against it that had never been used in a game before.

In hindsight knowing how well the Pats had that play scouted, if the receiver fakes inside and goes outside Butler still sells out inside and there's no one near the receiver. Then we all wonder how a defense can break down like that at the most critical point of the year.

Yes on the 3 CB/goaline but also read the Hawks never ran the stack/slant on the goaline . The always did fades.

I had read in a couple of places that Seattle often ran that play at the goal line. I believe the Pats actually practiced that defense against that very play. Butler got it wrong in practice, was coached up on it, and executed in the SB.

Not sure that is the safest. That would mean that we could expect a pass on the next play or it would have been game over if they got stopped on another run.

Yes, they actually show it in practice during "Do Your Job". It's a must-see program.

Regarding the haters that blasted the Seattle pass or Atlanta's pass attempts on NE's 21, in both situations, the defense is expected to play "run first" .....and as BB has taught us, you attack what is not expected. The fact that NE won these significant moments is irrelevant to what I believe were solid calls....pass.

But they didn't have a timeout. That was why the pressure was so much. The clock was ticking down and if they chose to run the ball twice they may well not have had time to run a fourth-down play.

Mike Lombardi is "must listening" for Pats fans.

Gr8 stuff here. So maybe the Pats keep Garoppolo with Brady being 40 and all.

I expect BB will do just that short being blown out of the water with a trade offer. Those teams who aren't willing to include a mid to high 1st round pick in an offer should go to plan "B", because the Pats aren't giving Jimmy away.

As much as I am loving the continuing Brady era, how awesome would it be to plug Jimmy into the QB spot and not miss a beat?

Some very deserving heads would be blowing up around the league.

They NEP absolutely practiced the play. I need to dig up where I read/heard that SEA had never ran Lockett on the stack play.

Great listen w Lombardi.

We all know BB won't risk the season turning to crap by not having a quality backup QB.

The main question is does BB, JMD, etc think Brissett is a quality backup and can win games in his league with his arm. I don't know the answer to that question.

If they do, Jimmy is gone. If they don't as you say it'll take a bushel of high picks to pry him loose from NE

People also forget that they shut Lynch down on a 4th & 1 earlier in that same Super Bowl lol

I just laugh at anyone who suggests it was a guaranteed victory if they just ran the ball with Lynch, or that it was a "foolish" play.. Everyone is a genius with the gift of hindsight
