I happened to see that Tavon Austin a top 10 pick had just 40 yds receiving this weekend, so it got me wondering how other rookie receivers did in their debuts this weekends.

Here are the top 5 WR picks from the first and 2nd rounds

T Austin - 40 yds
D Hopkins - TBA
C Patterson - 10 yds
J Hunter - 0
R Woods - 18 yds

I'm not a great research guy, so I didn't go further. If someone with skills could go further, I'd be curious to find out if ANY other rookie WR had more than 42 yds of production opening week

However just seeing what the top 5 WR picks did should put Thompkins inconsistent performance a little more in perspective. Not as bad as it looked through our own parochial prism

That is all well and good, but how many of those receivers had 14 targets? And I am on the side that say's Thompkins just needs to iron out some kinks, first time in a NFL game and all that.

Not the same because KT was a major target with poor results in production.
These other teams did not put themselves in the position where they were so critically dependent on a rook's production.

Saint Thomas saved us.

42 yards on 14 targets... so far, he's a little ahead of Lloyd's production last year. He just needs to learn to fall down immediately upon making the catch, especially if he's a yard shy of a first down.

Someone posted in another thread the stat line for all receivers that were drafted. The only receiver that had more yards was Kenny Stills of the Saints. I don't recall what thread it was in or who posted it and its more difficult to look up on my phone. But as others have said, the real issue is the number of targets vs number of receptions. I'm sure Thompkins' rookie jitters played a part and I am somewhat confident he and Brady will work through them.

But for 14 targets. I think the rookies didn't really know how the game would actually go compared to pre season. I think they will learn alot and will make a big jump now knowing what is expected of them.

He played 91 of 94 snaps and Brady seemed to continue to feed him the ball as much as he could.

He was obviously overwhelmed by his workload and played a terrible game. His welcome to the NFL came at the best possible time - the beginning and not the end.

Hopefully he learns from all his errors and makes adjustments/improvements. The fact that he has Brady's trust means he should have our trust too.

Hopefully, he's had a ton of mistakes to work on.

I think his very good play in preseason contributed to unrealistic expectations on our part; we expected Marques Colston to walk out of the tunnel. The guy has talent, if he can iron out the kinks he could be a player.

Personally, I hate the P word. Show me a team with potential and I will show you a team that isn't any good. The NFL is not a learning league, young rosters rarely have any success.

Here are the stats from another top AFC team.

Receiving REC YDS TD
D. Thomas 5 161 2
J. Thomas 5 110 2
W. Welker 9 67 2

Thank god we have Brady, he gives the Patriots a fighters chance in any matchup.

Who were the Pats supposed to throw out there? If there was a WR who would have put up 150 yards, that was available and affordable I am sure BB would have signed him.

Gotta develop some talent, got to find some raw talent and throw it out there. Also, if the Ravens actually showed up for the game the numbers would have not been that great. Factoring that in - DA had an incredibly clutch game more so that JT and Edelman had a better day than Welker.
