It may have already been over:

Worton's contract expired with the Patriots, as did all practice squad players after the AFC Championship Game. He will not be offered a deal with the team in 2016, a source told ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Edit: this could be another Danny Baugher, where cause and effect are reversed (i.e., he was told he was being let go before he was arrested).
