I don't see the Pats just unilaterally deciding that they don't need a WR on day one. If the Pats think Samardzija fits their system, they'll take him.
A better reason for passing on Samardzija in particular--though not WRs in general--would be his stated desire to try to play both baseball and football (why couldn't the Red Sox have drafted him, d%#*!@t?). Then again, I think that problem could be fixed by a 10-minute meeting with Rodney Harrison ("Hey, Jeff. Since you occasionally play deep safety, Coach asked me to run a couple drills with you. . . .").
