In the recent sad rash of violent crimes against NFL players, something keeps striking me. As soon as the first report comes in, fans on messageboards--others even more than this one--rush to berate the victim for somehow bringing it on himself.

Out on the city streets in the wee hours and got robbed at gunpoint? Totally irresponsible, he was asking for it by being in that place at that time of day. Asleep in his own bed when armed assailants broke into his home and shot him dead? He always seemed the thug type, you reap what you sow. Sitting in a driveway in a quiet residential neighborhood at 2:00 am on your day off when somebody shoots multiple bullets into your body? What terrible judgment, when will these guys ever learn.

I'm thinking it's time to read up on the "just world" fallacy.

In terms of just the NFL, we're losing some outstanding players to apparent random acts of violence. Are they random though? I have no idea; someone would have to compile stats of some kind I suppose, but it seem the number of players involved in a shooting of some kind just keeps rising.

It's sad and I hope the NFL takes a long look at possible solutions from a league perspective anyway. The league can't dictate everybody's friends, activities, and behaviors but going forward I hope they can become more proactive in somehow avoiding these tragedies.

Thoughts and prayers are with him. Last I heard he'd had surgery and was listed as critical but stable.

I'm not much with numbers, but...

There are approximately 1,600 NFL players. Most of these guys are going to be in major cities several months out of the year. With those odds it's probably just a matter of time. If you looked at some other business that had offices in 30 major cities across the country, probably a certain amount of them would wind up in the wrong place at the wrong time too; you just wouldn't hear about it because they're not as high profile.

Bingo. It really is amazing that this happens in every single case. Ther just has to be someway to blame the victim. Yet if he hadn't been shot, and somehow people found out he was outside of (gasp) a girls apartment at (gasp) 2:45 in the morning they wouldn't have thought twice about it being "poor judgement." What exactly about this displays poor judgment? Is it wrong to go to a girls apartment when you're 26? No. Is it wrong to stay out and have a good time until 2:45 am when you're over the age of 18? No. Someone please explain to me why anything about this displays "poor judgment."

Come to think of it, just what the hell does "poor judgement" even mean? Is it like some wishy washy half-assed way of saying someone did something generally wrong but you can't really articulate what that is? I don't know a single 26 year old who doesn't go out that late, and who doesn't sometimes go to girls apartments late at night. Oh the season is a week away, that means it's time to stay home and play scrabble, then go to bed at 9:30 because it really makes a difference. I mean, they're "celebrities" and they make more money than us, so that means we own them and they aren't allowed to have regular lives right?

This blame the victim syndrome everyone has because they're professional athletes and that means that they are supposed to live like puritans or else they're gonna get shot is absurd. I guarantee that the same people claiming "poor judgment" wouldn't be saying the same if their friends was the one who was shot while out late at a girls apartment. Seriously, the guy was a victim of a shooting, VICTIM, that is all that needs to be said.
