Seems like the BO'B to Penn State topic was discussed ad nauseum but I never saw anything mentioned about whether he might perhaps take any other assts or coaches with him to Penn State.

Once the news on McDaniels broke everyone seems to have approached it like - problem solved. go on to Broncos.

Sorry if I missed it and it was actually discussed, ....

But I think that could be more of an impact if we had a bunch of assistants leave with him.

(personally I think I would rather be a 3rd/4th layer NFL asst coach UNDER BB than even an OC or DC in college, but still every bit of talent drain and lack of continuity might hurt a bit.)

Anyone read/hear anything?

Why would anyone want to leave a top NFL team for a murky, scandal ridden college situation?

Someone should ask BoB that, he's gone and done it....money is my guess.

Well, at the end of the day, no one looks back on their career and say, "I made lots of money." Sports is about championships. And no one remembers that OC who won 3 superbowls. It's the HC. When BB took over New England, it wasn't a dream job either. Also, people have to understand that not many HC jobs open regularly, compared to the number of applicants. And there's no guaranteed that the organization would want you. So when there's a willing match, you more or less jump on it if you're fairly ready.

Well, one answer would be to be a head coach of a major program.

Since their is only one head coach, the question still applies.

BOB has said that 7 of 9 of his staff would be in place by mid-week. So it sounds like maybe the other two are currently with NFL teams in the playoffs. The Patriots name I keep hearing is Offensive assistant George Godsey.

Wouldn't a college coordinators job, for instance, also pay higher than say TE coach for the Patriots?

Thread premise was about other coaches leaving to be his assistant. Obviously you take a risk to advance your career by running a program.

I have no idea. Which current patriots coach is looking for a college coordinators job?

My bad, I thought you were responding about BOB leaving since no one else has left to join bob.

Bob coached in the college ranks for years before he landed here. I'm sure he has lots of friends in the fraternity. I think the rule here is if you don't want to burn bridges after we give you permission to persue other opportunities you don't raid us for talent in the pipeline unless perhaps it's redundant or blocked and likely gone anyway.

Why don't you ask the guy who left the NFL to take over as the DC for Auburn...

O'Brien's staff is largely in place, and despite the idea that no on wants PSU, he's done a good job already.

OC: Ralph Friedgen (former HC of Maryland, OC of Georgia Tech when they were national champs)

OL: Mac Macwhorter (former OL coach of Texas)

TE: J. Stollo (former OL coach in the MAC)

WR: Hixson (Buffalo Bills WR coach from this year.

RB: Charles London (Offensive Assistant from the Tenn. Titans).

DL: Larry Johnson (Penn State's top recruiter, mid-Atlantic area, Larry Johnson's Dad)

LB: Ron Vanderlinden (former HC at Maryland, Northwestern, Penn State's LB coach)

DC: Ted Roof (former DC at Auburn, Duke HC, an NFL guy too)

Still to be decided: DBs and Special Teams.

There is talk about QB coach going to Mark Whipple (former UMass coach and QB coach for Pitt Steelers).

It may be that part of letting O'Brien out of his contract was a promise not to take any Patriots' assistants with him.

I've heard rumors of Chad O'Shea joining him.

thanks upstater, pretty exhaustive information you provided. So it looks like Bill is taking off solo. any other turnover is BB, mcdaniels or the indivs own choice.

Ralph Friedgen is not the OC.

John Butler from South Carolina will handle DBs and special teams.

The only slot left is QB coach and OC. With BOB himself handling playcalling, the QB coach will probably be someone who can handle some OC duties.

Running rumor now is that will be George Godsey.

What do you mean "it may be part of letting O'Brien out of his contract"?? O'Brien's contract was up at the end of the season. And, he's currently still under contract with the Pats until then.

Interesting. I read a newspaper article this morning that Friedgen was getting the OC spot.

Only going by what Bob Kraft said. He said that O'Brien's contract was such that the Patriots had to approve him talking to anyone. They could have prevented him from taking the job. How? Because PSU needed a coach ASAP.

That was the going rumor early on. I think that stemmed from reports O'Brien had called Friedgen shortly after being hired.
