Yes common opponents is a tiebreaker. Not common opponents "within the division".It may read “common opponents”. I don’t recall the exact wording since I haven’t read it in a while, but I do know the Bills own that right now. You can check it yourself with the ESPN playoff machine.
We have these common opponents: AFC East (Dolphins, Jets) + NFC South (Bucs, Panthers, Saints, Falcons) + AFC South (Titans, Colts, Jags, Texans).
Bills are 5-3 against that group - beat Dolphins twice, Jets once, beat Saints, beat Texans, lost to Titans, Colts, Jags.
Pats are 6-3. Beat Jets twice, beat Panthers, beat Falcons, beat Texans, beat Titans, lost to Bucs, Dolphins, Saints.
I'm not seeing how the Bills have this tiebreaker.
