Re: WAAF Reporting

from espn.com scouts inc......they had him rated as the 4th best ILB prospect in 2005. ahead of lofa tatupu and kirk morrison

Thanks for the refresher. I remember that write-up before the '05 draft, and that I was disappointed that Seward was taken by Carolina earlier in the 5th round, well before the Pats had a chance themselves. I too liked him better than Claridge.

Do you, or anyone else (paging Mr. Sebman) have his current scouting report from Scouts Inc.?

Re: WAAF Reporting

Sorry BPF. I knew I'd read it someplace but couldn't remember, and I also thought it was an interview as a pro, not as a collegiate.

Wait a minute...really looks to me like he hurt it in college, then really hurt it once he got to Carolina.

The foot – ah, it’s great. It’s 100%. You know, it’s unfortunate what happened how it broke in the fourth game of the season on Monday night, but it’s something that Coach Fox and everyone knew what was wrong with me. It’s one of the, actually probably the main reason that I slipped to the fifth round of the draft, because I was projected a lot higher, like the third round. It’s good to get it fixed and it’s better that it happened now instead of like the third or fourth year. Just get it out of the way now and get it fixed and I’m just looking forward to having a great year this year with a foot that’s 100%.

Edwards: What exactly was wrong with the foot?

I had a stress fracture going into my senior year of college. I had an option to let it go because it was just a crack in my fifth metatarsal, which is like the last bone in your foot. They were like, well, you can just go ahead and try to play with it and we can take a chance of it being okay, or we can just put a pin in it right now and you probably wouldn’t start the first game but depending on how you felt you could come back as soon as you felt like you were ready. I just felt like at that time it was something that I need to do, so I went ahead and got it fixed and believe it or not, four weeks out of surgery, I didn’t start, but I played probably 30% of the snaps at Tennessee, our opening game. From that point on, I just started to play every play and it was something I did because I wanted us – you know I thought that we had a good chance to win, especially if I was in there playing.

Unfortunately, I did more damage to my foot than I ever thought possible and I ended up breaking the pin in my foot. When I showed up at the combine, I had ex-rays done on my foot and it revealed that not only had my stress fracture not healed because I had been playing on it and not giving it a chance to heal, but also that the pin was broken in my foot too. That was just a bad situation. Thankfully here with the Panthers we have a great orthopedics staff and they saw no problems with it, they took me right away and [the foot injury] was something they knew would happen. They knew I would have to have surgery on it eventually and I’m just glad I was able to make it to the fourth game and show the team and the fans what I can do and just give people a reason to be excited about me next year.

"Seward is athletic, fast and rangy. He's smart, instinctive and plays with a high motor. He gives good effort on coverage teams. He's an aggressive take-on player who attacks downhill and won't avoid a collision with a guard or big running back. He has good range and agility when chasing perimeter runs and working through trash. He's an effective tackler. He anticipates and times up his blitzes well. But he's adequate at best in coverage. He can be stiff when opening his hips and getting to underneath landmarks. He bites hard on play action when reading his keys, and he struggles to get back to his landmark in underneath zones. He lacks functional hand strength to disengage and get off blocks. He sometimes takes on blocks too high and gets knocked back. He can get stuck changing directions or reacting to a runner. Seward is a role player who can contribute as a backup and special teamer."

Re: WAAF Reporting

So, did the Pats actually sign him or is at speculation?

Thanks, BF.

I'm even more on the fence about losing a 5th-rounder for him than I was before. Also, I really hope that the FO doesn't stop looking for help/eventual replacements at ILB/OLB, even if Seward is signed.

As someone who wasn't sure about the idea of giving up a 2nd rounder for Welker last season (what the hell was I thinking...), I am all for trading a 5th rounder for someone who is at the very least an ST contributor, rotational ILB and with the upside of a full-time player. Because what really are the odds of are 5th rounder making the team let alone having that impact?

If Seward can be an early down run stuffer and we can draft Groves or a pass-rushing beast (and hopefully sign one more vet, a la Haggans), it seems like between Vrabel, AD, Bruschi, Seward, (vet) & (draftee), we'd have a pretty sweet rotation at the position.

Re: WAAF Reporting

Q: Who else besides Vrabel has been a successful 'steal'/'find' at the linebacker position?

A: Nobody, which is why Beisel is a perfectly appropriate response.

Let's face it, this is their alternative to drafting at linebacker.

Obviously, expecting Vrabel is optimistic (although he was a backup and special teams guy rated similar to this guy if not for the foot and not valued highly by his former team).

On the other hand, assuming a washout like Beisel is pessimistic. They've been following this guy a long time. Of course anyone available for a fifth isn't a sure thing.

They've only acquired three guys with much tread left on the tires in the Belichick era.

The best was the cheapest, Vrabel. Colvin had injuries, but wasn't as good as Vrabel IMO and had a pretty good contract.

Thomas cost pretty good bucks and is still learning IMO.

The Pats don't seem to like green linebackers and this kid has a few years. Seems to have a better chance to start at ILB than any other under 30's we have and we will need ILBs.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

Time to bump this thread as WAAF is reporting an imminent signing...

Haven't seen anything reported anywhere on this so far today.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

Maybe he was worth the 5th round pick.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

The Bengals have signed LB Blackstock, some had mentioned him as a possible signing for the Pats. I have never liked him as a player but he is off the market at this point.

That's what I hope the plan is, too.

That's too bad. I was hoping that the FO would fly him to Foxborough for at least a look-see.

I remember thinking during the '05 draft that selecting Blackstock at #84 would have represented excellent value, and that Hobbs (or the equivalent) would have been available at #100.

Maybe BB just doesn't like players from Al Groh-coached teams; a strange thought, considering that Virginia is one of the few college programs to employ a 3-4 defense.

Re: WAAF Reporting

When do the Pats formally announce the signing?

Re: WAAF Reporting

So I guess WAAF if full of Sh**
