I think what should be done in the front 7 is pretty simple- just keep adding depth. The secondary, however, is not so clear-cut.

Do we resign Talib?? Arrington?? Do we sign a FA Safety, draft a Safety?? What about Tavon Wilson?? What will be done with Dowling??

My only certains are McCourty starting at Safety and Dennard likely being a starting CB. I think at corner we'd be best off resigning Talib and Arrington. Then signing a vet, say Terrence Newman, to a 1 year that could compete for a spot with Dowling as a backup CB. So if either he doesn't work out, or Dowling can earn his spot, we can easily cut him and not take much of a hit. As for safety, I'd go draft one in the second round, maybe even the first, mainly due to this years strong safety class.

Thoughts??

Talib
Dennard
McCourty
SS
SS/FS- Gregory
Wilson
Ras-IR Dowling
Arrington as the dime. I've done with him in the nickel

Find two more great man to man guys and a hammer at SS.

I think we should start by saying

Dear Idiots,
....
..

start by looking at talib and see if it's worth it to give him a few year deal..if not..they need another #1 CB and bad

I like DRC even with his recent struggles

Talib, DRC, McCourty & Landry with Dennard in the slot would be nice...shame about that salary cap malarky.

A few observation on this post:

Tired of Arrington in the nickel?? Why?? That's where he actually excelled. That's why I thought signing Newman would be a good idea, he'd be cheap, and he can be good enough to start if one of our starters go down so Arrington can actually stay in the nickel, and not get thrown into the den like he did in the AFCCG. Dowling could take that role as well though it's unlikely since he's that kind of guy can walk onto the practice field and break an ankle.

Oh, and are you listing Dowling as a safety??

More talent and a better scheme.

Just curious, on your sig thing under your user name exactly what do you mean by more badasses?? Bad ass as in the way they play, as in their personality, or both??

1. Re sign Talib

2. DON'T re sign Arrington (He's Garbage)

3. Draft a CB (David Amerson)

4. Give Ras I Dowling one more chance to prove hes not made of glass.

5. Use a late draft pick to select Tyrann Matheiu.

6. Let Tavon wilson and Steve gregory duke it out in camp for the starting strong safety position.

now you have a secondary of Talib(6'1), Amerson (6'3), Dowling (6'2), Dennard, and Mathieu. Thats 3 tall rangy corners and 2 physical corners in the 5'9 - 5'10 range. you now have the players in the secondary to match up with most teams in the league.

I want them to get Dashon Goldson or Jairus Byrd very badly. What do you guys think of these two safeties / likelyhood that Belichick looks at them.

I just don't think Arrington has the man to man cover skills that the team needs in the nickel. I know he had a fine 2011 but last year even in nickel he got beat.

Newman would be a decent pickup. BB likes his vet DBs.

I'm not as high on Dowling as others are but the kid has outstanding talent and upside. He mauls receivers on the line. He just needs to be healthy.

Either way, I'd like to see the team pick up two CBs that excel in coverage on the outside. Typically guys that can cover on the outside can cover on the insider whereas guys that are pure "nickel" DBs are liabilities in coverage on the outside.

Not going to happen. Goldson is like Mike Wallace in that he has an unrealistic idea of how much he's worth and he's probably going to end up with the team that gets the closest to that. And anybody who thinks Goldson fixes the Pats secondary needs to watch Julio Jones' first TD this past weekend. Goldson played it about as well as Gregory would have.

Byrd is the better player, but is going to get an awfully big contract himself, probably in the area of Eric Weddle's $8M a year. He's also more of a FS than a SS, making his skills redundant with McCourty's.

Since being demoted to the nickel, Arrington never gave up more than 50 yards in a game. He was consistently giving up yardage in the 30s and 40s, but never hit 50. So while he was never a shutdown guy in the slot, he also was never abused.

Positional Needs:

1.3. 3 guys capable of playing press-man CB, also able to play decent zone coverage schemes
4. A good nickel/slot CB
5. A rangy FS who can guard the deep part of the field, support the CBs, and act as the "glue" for the entire secondary
6. A more physical safety, who can lay the lumber and establish a physical presence, but who isn't a major liability in coverage
7-8. 2 versatile backup safeties who can play a variety of roles
9-10. A dime/ST CB and a S/ST

Current Situation:

- McCourty is under contract, and should be the starting FS, covering need #5
- Dennard is under contract, and should be the starting outside CB at one spot (need #2)
- Dowling, Wilson and Gregory are under contract, and should factor into the mix at depth; Dowling could potentially be moved to S, or could be a press-man CB (need #3), given that we realistically need at least 3 press man CBs; Wilson and Gregory are probably better off for depth and as big nickel kind of guys (needs #7-8).
- Ebner is under contract, and should factor into need #10.

Needs to be Addressed:

That leaves us needing to fill the following:

1. At least 1, and possibly 2 big CBs who can play press-man, depending on whether Dowling can fill the 3rd big CB role (needs #1 and #3)

2. A physical safety who is not a liability in coverage (need #6)

3. A nickel/slot CB (need #4)

Possible Ways to Meet Those Needs:

1. The best approach would be to re-sign Aqib Talib if possible. He has experience and would provide continuity. Keenan Lewis would be a good backup option. Signing both would be ideal, but probably not feasible given our cap situation. I don't like the idea of a rookie here - I think we need experience in our secondary, not more youth.

2. A veteran FA would be idea. Dashon Goldson would probably be the best option, but he will probably get tagged and would cost too much. Kenny Phillips would probably be almost as good an option, and just might be available within range. Matt Elam would probably be the most effective draft option. Phillip Thomas might be another draft option.

3. Re-signing Kyle Arrington is probably the most reasonable option. It's possible that Marquice Cole could be a cheaper alternative, if keeping Arrington is too expensive and the team wants to put that money into a big outside CB or a physical safety. Note that if the Pats signed both Talib and someone like Keenan Lewis, then Dennard could probably play the slot role at times. For me, it's a question of how much it costs to keep Arrington vs. the other options.

My FA priorities would probably be, depending on the $ amount: Talib > Phillips = Lewis > Arrington.

The interesting question to me would be this: If the Pats could get both Keenan Lewis and Kenny Phillips for roughly what it would cost to sign Aqib Talib, would they be better off? That's a tough question.

Those are my basic thoughts.

Problem is we need a hard hitter, a true SS like we had with Lawyer and Rodney. I say we go after a guy like Kenny Phillips or Laron Landry. The reality is, most SS's tend to get hurt because of their style of play, so its ok if they tend to get injured often, we'll have depth with Gregory and Wilson.

This is If we sign a Safety In FA Instead of drafting one, of course.

How about Revis seems the new GM is "exploring" the option of trading him?

Aaron Hernandez for Darrelle Revis. Seems fair.

(no, Jets... you can't get Gronk!)

People need to stop suggesting Aaron Hernandez for anybody. He'd cost $10M against the cap to trade.
