Holley's take on DB

When I tuned in for a bit a little while ago that was being explained to Holley and he seemed to be catching on. The only difference is the $6M paydays start in 2006 vs. 2007. The new money is identical in AAV. He is a roughly $6M player in the final year of his rookie deal...duh.

And if the Seahawks or JETS want to disregard that remaining value season, that is their right. What is not their right is to expect us to. They didn't do it for Alexander or Abraham. And that is where the compensation escalates. And they know it, they are just lowballing us in comp so they can include the value of that comp in their offer to the player.

And Holley also said that they should trade him to the team offering the highest trade compensation, period. He thiks the JETS would be foolish to up the ante for Deion since in their case while he might represent a more substantial upgrade to their offense it will still not be enough to elevate them from more than a 4-5 win team to more than a 7-8 win team. In other words, for Seattle who should be a contender he might be a difference maker, for the JETS who will not be he won't. The JETS would be better served if the Patriots player they were trying to trade for was Matt Cassel.

Thanks Box and Lobster. What this says to me is that this is no longer about the money, it's become a pissing contest between Branch and Chayut and the Pats. Branch is the one who stands to lose. Would he seriously prefer a few dollars more to catch passes from Pennington or Hasselbeck? Pennington will get him killed.
I don't know what he would prefer, but if the Jest and Ospreys only offered second round picks as compensation while putting 36-39 million dollar contracts on his, I can't believe they were really serious about getting his services. Frankly, whether he or Chayut are the motivating force, he is between a rock and a hard place with fire ants heading for his backside. Time to sniff the coffee, get a new agent, and try and get the 3 year deal back on the table or just report to camp and try for Free Agency in March.

No trade to the Jets, period. If the Hawks still want him, then work something out with them.

I don't want to see that jerk 2X a year for the next 5 or more years.

I will never understand it with these people. How much would Branch's lifestyle change between $31 million/8 million guaranteed over five years and $36 million/13 million guaranteed over six years? Beyond a certain point you'd have to think that job conditions would be a factor (playing with Brady and a Super Bowl caliber team vs. Penny and the Jets, etc.). What tangible difference does a few more "million" make over and above so many millions already assured? It's too insane for words.

Deion holding out to week 10 is like getting your #1 WR back off the PUP for the stretch run. And unless he wants to really alienate his teamates and more seriously damage his reputation he will be looking to make a statement in those last 6 regular season and especially post season games. If we are cruising along heading into the bye he may be back sooner lest that continued success in his absence substantially devalues his future FA market value. He cannot afford to have the Brady factor underscored. If we are struggling he becomes the selfish jerk who jeopardized everybody's season (including 3 other players in their contract seasons). And having secured a draft pick or picks for him sooner rather than later will not alter that because 2007 draft picks can't play now.

Here is something that is not talked about much in regards to if Deion holds out until Week 10.

What happens to his value if the Pats are 9-1, Brady is killing it, and he's making Troy Brown & Reche Caldwell look exactly like Branch & Givens. If this is the case, everyone is just going to say Branch is a factor of the system and his FA value will plummet (this will only be enhanced if Givens has a poor season in TEN, which would anyone doubt with Uncle Rico aka Vince Young throwing to him??).

Deion takes a huge risk by sitting out until Week 10, and I think eh knows it.

Scary scenerio for the kid, and I'm doubtful if he has thought about it in that way...

I hope he's thought about how he plans to pay for the constant care his handicapped son.

I really don't think so. A pissing contest implies it's about ego rather than substance, but I think this is still very substantial indeed to Jason Chayut.

Imagine that you're Chayut. You have one high-profile client and you could have gotten him a $33-mil extension, but instead you rolled the dice. You opted for a high-profile holdout to try to void the last year of his existing contract, giving yourself a name as a playa in this here agent biz.

But the team didn't bite. Now the season is starting, your client has racked up half a million in fines based on your advice, and still no contract. If he sits until game 10 he's given away a million bucks and gotten nothing whatsover out of it except changing his reputation from "one of the league's good guys" to "just another a-hole WR." Maybe he's even pissed off enough about this to consider switching agents and letting somebody else handle the big FA contract.

So what do you do? You grasp at any straw handy. You file a grievance or two. Maybe something will break your way. Cause otherwise, you're toast.

I believe it's true, but THE GUY IS ALREADY A MILLIONAIRE FROM HIS ROOKIE CONTRACT!!!! He could retire right now and be set for the rest of his life, as long as he didn't fritter his money away like a fool the past few years.

The longer offer from the Patriots is reported to be 31 million over 5 years with 8 million gauranteed. The Jets/Hawks offer is reported to be in the 36 to 39 million range for 6 years with 13 million guaranteed (it is said the other deal can get him more over the first 3 years too which is really the most important part). Taking the average of the supposed 36 to 39 million range, let's say 37.5 million over 6 years. Pats offer = 6.2 mill per year, Jets/Hawks offer 6.3 mill per year. So the yearly thing is pretty close except for this, the Patriots want this year to still count. So it is actually a 6 year deal at 32 million Team Branch will contend. Also, Team Branch wants the higher guaranteed money. The Patriots have also come back with 3 years at 19 million. The stopping point, Team Branch contends, is that first year thing again. I assume the Patriots insistance on that year is what caused Team Branch to not participate in the offer/counter offer thing. I hope that helps.

The 3 year offer had the $8M in bonus, the 5/$31+ reportedly had $11. Likely that was also a 2 teir bonus, we don't know if that is the case with these other teams offers.

this is what makes me crazy:
1. if the maximum salary in the nfl, nba, nhl, mlb was $100,000 a year, 90% of the players (and coaches) would still be there, knocking themselves out.it's their game, they'been doing it since they were 8-9 years old.

2. there IS NO DIFFERENCE in standard of living between a $28 million contract and a $45 million deal. no matter the years, guaranteed, nothin. it's puzzled me for years. i asked eddie andleman about it couple years ago and he said athletes have come to see the size of their deals and, like, the size of their family jewels. it's an ego and envy thing.
the owners have bought in to it as well. they can't regulate themselves either.

Yes, Deion is the father of twin boys. One came down with spinal meniginitis after he was born and is now in a facility in Kentucky (if memory serves) were he receives constant care. Deion has done some charity work on behalf of the Spinal Meningitis Foundation.

This is from my memory of a Jackie MacMullen article from a few years ago.
