The company has since rallied, and it announced today the introduction of the Vicis Zero2 Trench. It’s the first helmet developed specifically for offensive and defensive linemen.

That is one awesome looking helmet, but even better is the crush impact zones to absorb the shock. It seems much like modern crash technology in cars.

I have always wondered this for years. Why not design helmets for specific positions? Extra pad/harder shell in the front of the helmet for lineman as they are generally absorbing impacts head on. Extra padding through the temple and back of the head for receivers and QB's as a lot of the time they are ending up on their back with their head bouncing off the ground. Obviously I am no doctor or engineer but I think this is a great idea.

Thanks for sharing - very interesting concept. I cant help but think the guys on the line probably need all the help they can get in making it through their playing days without pretty severe long term health implications.

Interesting point about the impact zone. I wonder if there could be a brighter head injury prevention future if helmets were designed to be nearly disposable. Let the helmet fail where it's supposed to fail - crumpled and dented - then get a new one for the next play and keep going. Also, engineer the helmets to clearly signal if some aspect of its integrity is compromised.

Instead, we've got the total opposite - I think of the rules that prevent the Patriots from wearing white shells to do the Pat Patriot / red jersey throwback combo.

Maybe the current paradigm is just the better way of providing better safety - would be interesting to know what has been tried.

Are they designing one for Mike Remmers?

Prototype unveiled....

Some good pics of the helmets @Link
I thought this comment was interesting....will teams need to change their logos for lineman. wouldn't that be going against the "shield"?
Wow, the Trench has a lot more ridges and vents. Isn’t it going to be hard to put team-logo decals on that shell?

It sure seems like that could be an issue, yes.

Amazing to me that this is only happening now what with Goodell's concern for player safety and his integrit...never mind
They could place sensors in the helmets to measure impact.

If the NFL actually knew that data, it would end the NFL forever as we know it. Bill Romanowski stated that he hit guys so hard that when he made it back to sideline, he sometimes sat on a guy already there because he was so out of it mentally.

The NFL cares about one thing, and one thing only:

Does anyone know how these helmets actually work? They can not reduce the impact energy. They can store or distribute the energy. If they store the energy through deformation, the helmet is ruined which is OK if it works well. Why don't they combine helmet and shoulder pads so the energy is distributed away from the head? I have not looked into this and wonder if anyone else has.
