Heath Evans: Belichick is the funniest guy I have ever been around
By: John Morgan

Former Patriot Heath Evans spoke on WEEI this morning. What will certainly shock many outside of New England whose viewpoint of Bill Belichick's personality is limited by what they see and hear in post-game press conferences, Evans called the Pats head co...

Makes sense to me. BB has always struck my dry New England sense of humor.

Great story about Randy Moss too...

EEI is getting some good interviews. Keep posting them John. Good read.
I've always thought that BB had a fantastic wit.

I was just about to comment on that. Somehow or another I don't ever recall hearing that before. Unfortunately good-news stories like that get pushed aside, especially when the media and the public has already formed a negative opinion about that person.

Similarly, I'm guessing Evans' comment about Belichick's sense of humor will most likely not get much of any discussion outside of New England - and if it does it will be dismissed since it does not play into the predetermined perception people have of Belichick.

Awesome. This guy's gonna be great in the studio.

Anybody see the segment yesterday with Evans/Randel El and Mike Lombardi's blue/red chip list?

It was rather interesting hoe players and office personnel look at things.

100% correct, in my opinion. Since it flies in the face of BB's national perception, I'm guessing it won't even be mentioned nationally. If it is, it'll be in a dismissive, mocking manner.

Rather than start a separate thread on it, I'll put this here since it applies to Belichick and his teaching methods. I thought it was a pretty good column by Tom Curran:

Belichick explains his teaching style

Buried in the avalanche of words, grunts and shrugs emanating from Bill Belichick press conferences are gems.

He's been an NFL coach since 1975. He's coached in seven Super Bowls. He knows how the 53-man sausage that is an NFL team gets made.

And while Belichick readily admits his is not the only way of doing things that may work, from the outside looking in, it's apparent his way works pretty well.

So it was interesting to hear him explain earlier this week how a play gets installed.

It's the essence of teaching, the essence of coaching. How do you get your students to "get it."

In Curran's column Belichick goes on to explain the progression of installing a play, from a diagram on paper, to training tapes, to 1-on-1 drill, to 7-on-7's, and through to a full 11-on-11 execution of the play. Belichick also explains the importance of players understanding the concept of the entire play, and not just what their specific role in that play is.

I'm not a bit surprised, I always knew BB had that dry humor, I have it, and only the people who know me get it. You've seen enbough pressers where he will insert something funny, dry but funny. I'm sure he cracks himself up at least.

I agree.... I've seen a few of his segments and he is a natural.... Talking in front of the camera about something he so clearly loves comes very easy by him.

I enjoy his stuff so far. Not even cuz he's an ex-Pat (but that helps )

That Larry Bird like gestault is why the 2001-4 era Patriots were SO resilient. Guys like Phifer, Bruschi, Milloy, Seymour and later Harrison had the entire field of 11 Band of Bro assignments in their heads. So when a guy like Harrison did improvise, he did it in the context of knowing what the implications were of not doing what his assignment called for.

Here's another example of that perception, from just a few hours ago, going outside the world of sports.

Bill Belichick Would Deliver Weak Cameo Performance on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' Says Larry David - Entertainment - NESN.com

Basically people outside New England incorrectly assume that what they see in a post-game press conference is the total summation of Belichick's personality.

On the Wes Welker Foot Interview - you really have to think that Bill just took him aside and said,

"Wes - you know I'm going to have to punish you for that... but between you and me, well done!"

lets face it. if bb were the jets coach he'd be the second coming of mahatma ghandi, winston churchill and jerry lewis all rolled into one. instead , he's the pats coach so he's josef stalin, rudolph hess and charlie sheen all rolled into one with espn as pravda.

If by "being the Jets coach" you mean "hadn't won anything," then I might agree. Really, it's natural for neutral fans to rankle at a perennial powerhouse, and BB's insistence on approaching press conferences with all the charisma of a soviet bureaucrat makes him a natural villain. Doesn't bother me.
