Heads up on 2014 Cap Page

Thanks for the update. It's always a great feature of this site.

I hope that they are able to get cap relief from the NFL for AH, the criminal and Fanene. That would be about $9,000,000 and would be huge next off season.

not a direct relation to the 2014 players on cap. but any news of relief on the Fanene figures for 2012 and 2013. Its indirectly linked.

Cap hit on IR

What's it at now? I'm sure I seen some numbers a few weeks ago that were ridiculous...

the answer to your question can be found by clicking the link on the OP.

so it looks like there's very little wiggle room for next year.

Basically, they'll be looking for some space from Vince/Mankins and can presume there'll be some Mathletics on Bradys cap number as most of it is paid in bonus so they can transfer the cost across the rest of his remaining contract.

Connolly/Kelly and Gregory will be under pressure on those cap figures for the year also.

Thanks Miguel. Looking at this page, it seems the Pats are going to need to make some moves to free up space. Here is what I see:

  • Obviously, Sopanga will be cut.
  • Wilfork will not play under his current cap number. Either he will take an outright pay cut or get an extension or get outright cut. No way are they going to have a 33 year old Wilfork coming off a major injury to have a $7.5 million base salary.
  • Tommy Kelly could be cut. Chris Jones has been a find and played well in his replacement. I think Jones will be a solid starter in that position. He makes Kelly expendable. Kelly could take a pay cut to stay and be a pass rush specialist.
  • Gostkowski could get an extension to bring down his cap number.
  • Adrian Wilson will be cut, but at a minimum cap savings.
  • Slater could be extended.
  • Gregory could be cut if the Pats feel Harmon is good enough to start. If not, they could ask him to take a pay cut.
  • They could redo Mankins' deal. They could convert much of his $4 million base to a bonus. But considering he is not performing to the level of his contract, I do not know if they want to increase the dead money even more.
  • Connolly might be cut or have his contract redone.

Re Mankins.

this is pure speculation.
If the team figures he's not cutting the mustard on his contract. could it be a case that he's a assigned a post June cut and the cap loss would spread across 2014/15 seasons.

I mean obviously its saying a lot for the team to cut him considering some of the other O-line issues.
we would need to add two players in the draft/free agency and hope they really stick.
I do think the team look for some sort of relief on that number in 2014 though.

With Rob Gronkowski on Injured Reserve, the Patriots now have $27.4 million in cap dollars on IR. That works out to 21.1% of adjusted cap number, which is the second most in NFL.

The only team with more is the Rams ($28.8M, 23.4%), thanks in large part to Sam Bradford being signed just prior to the rookie wage scale going into effect.

At best, redoing Brady's deal in 2014 would save $787,500 in cap space while adding 262,500 to his cap hits in 2015/2016/2017.

Please note that McCourty has a $3.2 million escalator for the 2014 season.

Do the cap savings for cutting Vollmer seem a bit low.

or am I reading it wrong?

Any news on Pats attempt to recoup the $7.5M cap hit for AH? Obviously that would give them a lot more flexibility for 2014.

A leading indicator would be a FA starting guard signing and/or a 2nd/3rd round pick used on a guard

Thanks Miguel -- this is great stuff as usual, and we really appreciate all your effort here!

Question on Adrian Wilson -- your file says that the 2014 cap savings if cut or traded is $671,666. Can you explain why that is the case? His base salary for 2014 is $1.5M, and his remaining bonus left to be amortized in 2014 and 2015 is $666,667 ($333,333 each year). So if he's cut, an additional $333,333 would be accelerated to 2014 but the $1.5M base is gone (which doesn't appear to be guaranteed). So wouldn't the cap savings be in the neighborhood of $1,166,667 instead of $671,666? What have I missed?

I should have done a better job that the cap savings is a net savings after the rule of 51 is applied.

When a player in the Top 51 is cut, his spot is taken up by another player

Example - player has a 2014 cap of 1,000,000 which is all salary. He is released. A player with a $495,000 salary takes his place. Net savings - $505,000

The Pats have not tried to recoup the $7.5 million cap hit. It is the other way around. AH has filed grievances asking that he get paid his 2013/2014 salaries and his nominally guaranteed 2014 workout bonus.
