The Unauthorized History of the Pacific War podcast (which is a great listen) did an episode on the meaning of Memorial Day a couple of years ago. It’s only 8 minutes long, but it’s pretty powerful stuff:

Take a moment today to remember and honor those who have fallen

and given their lives for our country
Brave selfless souls
Puts into perspective how trivial in the grand scheme of things we discuss on this board

Honor, valor, sacrifice and commitment.
Our freedom is a gift from those who laid it on the line and fought

Take 5 minutes and remember

I like to think that many fallen soldiers lived their last days a little better by talking football with their squadmates. Ribbing each other with their teams' rivalries. Forgetting their burdens for just a few moments.

Thank you for sharing the video...very moving.

Germany was pretty badass, they embarrassed EVERYONE they came upon..they bumrusshed everyone...they stalled in USSR Because of manpower, the Russians had manpower, even if they were weak.
The Germans were tough.
We lost a LOT of men fighting those c unts.

Imagine that, look at Germany on the map, and look what they were able to accomplish...fkn shocking.

I saw some discussion about the usage of "Happy" in regards to Memorial Day. There is something to that in a lot of ways because for hundreds of thousands families, today isn't "Happy". Just something to think about.

I don't say "Happy" myself, but I have personal reasons for that. I don't get bent out of shape when I hear it, and when someone says it to me, I usually reply with something like "thanks! hope you have a great one"

It's not my job to police all that. My job was to, in theory, defend Americans' right to live their lives in peace, with liberty, and with the ability to pursue prosperity and happiness. And if someone wants to say "Happy Memorial Day", then **** it, let em have at it and pass me a bourbon. America

I hear you, not a 'happy' sorta day at this address either. As is my custom I poured one out for the fallen, we all have our ways.
I'd willingly pass you that bourbon and honor yours as well Brother.

Appreciate it, brother. Same here.

We share the same custom.

Indeed it is... Trying to come-up with a more appropriate adjective, but too many strawberry daiquiris...

Fell asleep watching the 1962 film The Longest Day on the ship last night… Yeah it might glorify combat some, but that’s what you’re gonna get in a movie with John Wayne in it; but it still does it more realistically than most… It’s also 3 hours long, but on a rainy day it’s well worth the time… Those aerial shots of the beach are a powerful reminder of just how close the invasion came to being a complete disaster. The song at the end always gets me too.
