Raiders’ offseason: What we know - Inside The Oakland Raiders - A look inside the world of the highly classified Oakland Raiders from the writers of ANG Newspapers

– If Burgess isn’t traded, he ought to be prepared for fewer snaps as a pass rush specialist. Greg Ellis moved directly into the starting lineup at left end and according to the Dallas Morning News got a three-year contract worth $10 million.

Perhaps the former pro bowl pass rusher is a little more expendable at the moment?

No question that his value to Raiders is less now. We don't know if BB is interested and, if he is, what value he places on him, and what Oakland wants in return. We will know all these things if and when it happens.

The trouble with the Patriots getting Burgess is that they would

be getting an unhappy player who wants a new enhanced contract.

I'm really not even sold on Burgess. I'm more excited at the prospect of getting Woods and Crabel on the field to see what they can produce. That's just me, though.

For what it's worth, here is what a Raider beat writer from an Oakland paper had to say yesterday regarding Burgess. From what I get out of it, there's a good chance Burgess remains in Oakland this year.

Live chat: Inside the Oakland Raiders, Thursday, 1 p.m. - Inside Bay Area

[Comment From Mr. Raider]
what are the odds of the raiders keeping Burgess with the signing of Ellis?

jerrymac: The Raiders normally ask for more than teams are willing to give, with the notable exception giving up Moss for a fourth. Because of that, I think there's a good chance he'll be around. And having him as a pass rusher with reduced snaps could enhance his effectiveness.

[Comment From MexAlDavis]
With Greg Ellis on the roster any chance of trading Burgess, Walters and say a 2nd to NE for Wilfork?

jerrymac: No way NE gives up all that for a QB the Raiders are going to cut and a player who doesn't want to be a Raider. No way Raiders give up a second considering Wilfork would be is in the same boat as Burgess and wants big money. They're already paying Kelly big money at DT. One of those deals that looks great on talk radio and the Internet but probably isn't do-able.

[Comment From Raiderjim]
Bringing Ellis to sit oposite of Burgess seems to be something that may work in our favor. Should help Burgess if he's healthy. What are your thoughts

jerrymac: If both players are around when the season starts it's a possibility and would make sense on passing downs . . .

[Comment From Paul]
Notwithstanding their commentary to the contrary, do you think the Raiders pursued Ellis in part because they intend to trade Burgess?

jerrymac: I think they signed him with the understanding that he was worth having even if they decided to hold on to Burgess because they didn't get an offer to their liking.

I think Burgess, when healthy would definitely help our glaring position of need.

That said I totally agree with the rest of your post, PatsBoy12...

I really wanna see Crable earn his place at OLB rotation.

Yeah, it definitely wouldn't hurt to pick someone up at a reasonable "price." Burgess' asking price, as well as the Raiders organization, might just be too high; all that for a guy with a huge asterisk by his name in the one area that causes the most concern: health.

And that's why I would never, ever, trade one of our 2nd-rounders for somebody > 30 on the last year of his contract. I would however offer Weird Uncle Al the 7th-rounder we recieved in the Greg Lewis trade.

At this late date, the best cost-effective move might be to wait & see if Travis LaBoy can be healthy before the end of TC.

Imho, I think that we should just trade DE Green and a 7th to Oakland for OLB Burgess. That way it covers up Burgess's salary and adds more to the team. It even allows another DL rookie (besides Brace, of course) to make the team instead of being on the practice squad. If that trade ever went down, I would miss Green and all but then again we would be getting a fierce pass rusher, a quick rookie DL, and A CHANCE TO RESIGN WILFORK!!! I would LOVE that trade!!!

Id rather have a healthy Jarvis Green than Burgess any day. Greens healthy and when he is he can get to the qb. Plus hes a good backup to have incase something happens to either seymour or warren.

From Rotoworld...

ESPN's Len Pasquarelli warns not to be surprised if Raiders DE Derrick Burgess is traded to New England before training camp.
There were rumblings that trade talks involving Burgess had died, but the Pats still appear interested after generating just 30 sacks as a team last year. The Raiders reportedly killed the talks during the draft, so we'll see if the Patriots have upped their offer. If Burgess returns to Oakland, he'd collect $3.5 million to be a nickel end behind Greg Ellis and Trevor Scott.

Great, Rotoworld's "analysis" of Len Pasquarelli's "reporting."

While I can't discount it, it also depends on Oakland setting a, you know, sane price for Burgess (e.g., not O'Connell + Vollmer).

I saw that on Rotoworld earlier today and I did this  LOL.
However, I wouldn't be surprised if Burgess is traded to New England if indeed he is buried on the depth chart.

Huh??? I do not think the Pats will up their offer any..if the Raiders are waiting for that they MAY wait a long long time!! They will be the ones who will have a player there deep in the depth charts collecting a TON of money...LP showed he really doesn't get it if he thinks after Davis's outrageous demands the Pats are going to give him more...The Raiders are stuck with a problem and they can sit and wait and see it fester moe and more..F them!! I really doubt a trade will happen with that sort of attitude.
Team X demands way way too much..the makes moves that make their position even more difficult by bringing in a player that will take th eplace of the player involved. Why on earth would ANY team decide to up an offer to this said dumb team X?? THAT does not make any sense at all.
Health, contract, age...I really think given the situation that the Pats would be smarter to go with the young players. They also have Willie McG back if they think he could add something for a last year....
Don't see this happening unless the Raiders get a bit more serious in making demands.

This is Al Davis we are talking about. He is the guy who let Marcus Allen rot on the bench rather than trade him when he had a ton of trade value. Earlier this offseason, the Raiders were asking for ridiculous trade compensation for Burgess. According to Mike Lombardi, the Raiders were asking for Sebastian Vollmer and Kevin O'Connell. That is asking for a second and a third round pick. That is way too much for Burgess since he may only b a one year solution.

NE isn't the only team who might be in play, the Raiders may be hoping someone needs an edge rusher replacement sometime during preseason.

maybe Washington will lose their two starting DE's again

Or the Pats could be waiting to see if the Raiders cut him...This is Al Davis of 2009 we're talking about, not the 1960's Al Davis.....
