If Gramatica comes into a game in place of Vinatieri and misses a FG, the irony will be complete... and utterly historic in scale.

Realize, though, that each game Vinatieri misses hurts the Pats, because we'll get a worse Compensatory Pick.
The most we will get for him is a sixth, but anyway I thought compensaiton was based on contract $$$, not how many games he plays.

Contract $$$ is the main criterion for determining the round, but other factors such as playing time do have a small impact (e.g., they might add some relatively small percentage to a player's contract if he makes the Pro Bowl).

But the fact that Vinatieri is missing the first game of his career, in the long run, won't really make much of a difference to worry about.

yeah, good for him.

Perhaps this is blasphemy given the team involved, but I'm glad for Gramatica. He worked hard and had a solid camp, it seemed clear that he deserved a job in the league.
and truth be told, also for us.
da colts may never get over the hump. achilles' heels: 1) kicking. 2l' payton is close to being a zombie over the pats. he throws really bad passes against our boys.

Quite remarkable that he's never been hurt and now goes down after changing teams and seeming to be eager to make a big impact.

Actually, the way I looked at it, AV has already missed two games: Pats-Bills and Pats-Jets. But that feeling will pass I am sure

AV has been hurt before, he just has been able to play through the pain - go back and look for his off years and you'll get a pretty good handle on when his medical problems undercut his kicking.

from USENET...

INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 22, 2006) -- The Indianapolis Colts likely will sign kicker Martin Gramatica for their Week 3 game against Jacksonville as a possible replacement for Adam Vinatieri, who is nursing a groin injury and has not practiced all week.

Gramatica tried out with the Colts on Sept. 20. Although he was not signed after the workout, coach Tony Dungy said Sept. 22 the team was leaning toward signing Gramatica, at least for kickoffs.

"He may do everything," Dungy said. It would be Gramatica's second stint with the Colts and his third with Dungy, who coached Gramatica at Tampa Bay before he became the Colts coach in 2002.

Gramatica, who played his first six seasons in the NFL with the Buccaneers,
signed with Indianapolis in December 2004, a week after he was cut by Tampa Bay. He was used for kickoffs in the Colts' final four regular-season games and one playoff game.
A decision on whether Vinatieri plays will come at game time
