Goodell is the most PR aware Commissioner that I remember. He understands, rightly so, that the NFL makes its money from TV and its sponsors. This gives us some leverage. Boston is the 5th largest media market and the 2nd wealthiest major market. In addition, most of the other top markets have multiple teams.

I just sent an email to Goodell stating that while I believe the Patriots should be punished for their actions, if the punishment is too harsh, I will not watch another out-of-market game for the rest of the season. In addition, I will contact sponsor and tell them that I will be avoiding their products.

Having worked in imagine sensitive offices before, it's amazing what 50 emails will do. If people believe a 1st and 3rd plus suspension is too harsh, let the NFL know and then tell them how you, as a customer, will change your behavior because of their choice.
