"It’s the lingering thought in the back of everyone’s mind, the wild card element to Sunday’s showdown in San Diego between the Patriots [team stats] and Chargers.

What is Marty Schottenheimer going to do to screw it up?

We know, we know. History means nothing. Earnest Byner’s fumble occurred 19 years ago. John Elway isn’t walking through that door. Elvis (Grbac) has left the building.

But Schottenheimer’s past is so star-crossed and the numbers are so striking it can’t be ignored. Bill Belichick has the second-best postseason record in NFL history. Schottenheimer has among the worst. How can that not be an issue? "

Maybe because Marty is no longer calling all the shots?

Read elsewhere in the forum that after the Raven's game, Marty is no longer with his headsets and lets his coordinators call the game as they think fit.

Which will make it all the funnier when his sphincter tightens during Sunday's game and he's scrambling on the sidelines for a headset, so he can scream "Run it up the middle! The middle!" at his offensive coordinator late in the first quarter.

It's funny you say this, because I was thinking a similar thought. Imagine the Chargers start the game by throwing in order to loosen the Pats' run D and catch the Pats off guard. However, this backfires as Rivers throws a couple of picks, one returned for a TD and the Pats are up 14-0 early. Marty then loses faith in his OC and dons a headset. I think all of the Chargers fans would puke at that sight.

It's not going to happen, but if by the miniscule chance it did, I hope NFL Films captures it for posterity. High commedy indeed.

Regards,
Chris

I don't know if this has been posted already but was watching ESPN this morning and Peter King said that because of the rift between Marty and GM Smith that if Chargers lose on Sunday Marty is likely to be fired. He reasoning is a 14-2 team that is loaded with talent (built by Smith) losing in first round of playoffs.
