Here's a review of a typical experiece at Gillette on game day. I am sure there are folks who will not agree with my assessment. One of the highlights:
The fan base is knowledgeable, but a bit spoiled. It conjures up memories of the 49ers crowds of the late 80's and early 90's: spoiled by years of success. Pats fans are quite capable of ratcheting up the noise for a Colts or Steelers game, but when a lower level non-division opponent comes to town, it's surprisingly quiet.
