It Is What It Is » Bye-Week Breakdown: Running backs

Overview: The Patriots running game has had a very successful start to the 2011 season, averaging 4.6 yards per carry and 124 yards per game — excellent numbers when you consider that the Pats have faced three of the top 11 run defenses in the league (Dallas, Miami and San Diego) in terms of yards allowed through the first six weeks.

The 124 YPG is 8th in the league, which is the highest the Patriots have ranked since 2008. Also we are the only team in the top 10 to have zero fumbles resulting from a run. The only other team with zero fumbles are the Titans who rank dead last in YPG.

Depth chart: BenJarvus Green-Ellis (91 carries, 391 yards, five touchdowns, 4.3 yards per carry), Danny Woodhead (30 carries, 122 yards, zero touchdows, 4.1 yards per carry), Stevan Ridley (28 carries, 180 yards, one touchdowns, 6.4 yards per carry)

BJGE is way ahead of where he was this time last year, when through the first five games in '10, he only had 57 carries 235 yards and 3 TDs. This shows that when given more opportunities, he delivers. He is on pace for a 1,043 yard season if things continue the way they have lately. And before some posters claim that this pace will slow down, remember that the number of runs will increase as the season progresses and we get into bad weather football.

Ridley, in the small sample he has given has shown stellar results. He figures to become a bigger part of the run game, and I hope to see a consistent rotation and spelling at the RB position as the season progresses so that everyone is kept fresh.

It will be interesting to see what happens if Faulk get activated. Who will be the odd man out?

I'll be the odd man out. I garuntee that I won't get more than 50% of the carries that I've been getting.

Where are you getting 1250? 391 in 6 games works out 1043 in 16 doesnt it?

This. He's averaging about 65 yards per game, which is sitll on pace for about 35 more yards or so than last season if I remember correctly.

I do think the running game will get more focus though in coming weeks.

Equally impressive is that this group has never fumbled this year..

I agree it's impressive, but not surprising. We only had one fumble on a rushing attempt last season that I can recall, and that involved Danny suffering a pretty good knock on the head against Miami. I don't think we had any rushes fumbled earlier in the year.

Turnovers I recall were 5 INT's and a strip sack?

Possible we get two 1000yd rushers this year? :singing:

I doubt it...BJGE will remain our premeir back with Woodhead/Ridley/Faulk splitting carries after that(and woodhead/faulk in the receiving game as well)

its amazing how our running game went from non-existant in 09 to having a solid running game in 10' and even better in 2011..

alot of that has to do with the talent of BJGE and Woodhead....and now looks like we did good drafting Ridley

And despite all of this, BJGE still does not get the credit he deserves on this board. Even if he gets over 1,000 again.

Faulk, if he's anywhere what he was when he went down, will only solidify the RB group further, but I think his best will come in as a true mentor for the younger RB's. His leadership will help greatly.

Faulk is the wise elder, BJGE and Woodhead are the present and Ridley looks like a real potential featured RB of the future. Hopefully we can add Vereen to the future list this season or next. I don't think Ridley is the man right now, but he looks like he will be very strong in the not so distant future.

For such a defensive minded coach, BB sure knows how to build an offense! If the D can pull it together, things are shaping up! :rocker:
