Examining if the Patriots have adopted a win-now approach this offseason
By:

I had asked my Twitter followers what should be my next bog post....

A good read as always...

I look at Revis as a one year rent a player. His year 2 salary is simply a legal way of granting him a no-tag clause without actually granting it IMO.

Does that make them a win-now team? No more than I think Belichick tries to go into every year with the ability to win-now. There's always weak points in any team given the cap, though one tries to backfill with affordable rookies and veterans.

But injuries and other player losses are always the wild card regardless of whether one is in "win now" or not

There've been some nice improvements but the future is far from mortgaged - in fact they have plenty of projected cap room (again I'm not counting Revis Year 2)

but for Revis and others like him, I think it's a win win as they have an incentive to play well this year - and having the "problem" of contemplating keeping him at that hefty price tag would mean he is worth it, and that wouldn't be a bad thing

Excellent. Thanks Miguel. It's not fair that you can crunch all those numbers and also write well. I'm jealous.

I don't think that the team is in any way adopting win-now approach. If anything, they are not doing enough to bring in players, and pushing an "average" amount of cap money into the future.

The team is spending less cash than almost anyone else, precisely because of the low amount of bonuses.

As for Revis, we signed him for a 1-year contract instead of franchising our own free agent for about the same money. In a win-now approach, the team would have signed a $12M-$15M long-term contract with a large bonus, pushing money to the future.

There are lots of ways to have brought in another couple of $10M a year players. The team chose not to do so. The team chose NOT to have a win-now approach.

I find it curious that many think that Belichick is adopting a win-now approach when the truth is that Belichick has been overly conservative.

I agree. I think people are saying that cause really for the first time ever BB signed a big name outside FA yes they signed Adalius Thomas and Rosevelt Colvin but 4.5 and 5.5 million per for LB's is far from braking the bank for a outside FA.

the Brandon Browner signing has the potential to be a big time bargain and Revis is a one year deal the pats will get his 12 million back plus the CAP is going to go up even more in 2015 the pats could have and really still could sign or re-sign anyone that want
