Patriots draft could bring championships - AFC East Blog - ESPN

Not exactly a shocking revelation and certainly is Mr. Obvious facts, but still its likely a crucial draft while Brady continues his career with his retirement not so far away once he reaches his mid to late 30s in a few years.

In the past I liked the old trade moves dropping our picks into multiple ones in the later rounds and into next year as done in the past, but with a soon to be 34 year old Brady those moves will be getting more and more as a bad move if we want Brady to reach a 4th or more rings.

I think Belichick realizes his window of opportunity with a QB that will go down in history as one of the best ever is starting to close ever so slowly...those trade down moves and moves into the next season in the draft have to slow to a minimum if we are to win NOW.

I agree with what Dilfer is saying. I think the foundation of the team is almost there, and with the way the team is positioned in the draft this year, it is time to get two impact players on both sides of the ball.

Brady will play for at least 5 more years and you want to change the approach to the draft thats brought consistent success for a decade ????? Maybe we should draft a whole gaggle of players who end up not making the roster ?? Next year they'll be plenty of holes to fill and you'll wish we had a few extra picks to play the draft board and get them.

So what you are saying is there is a better chance of upper tier picks in the top 3 rounds not making the roster than there is 5th to 7th round picks that do?

Let me know what you are smoking

And BTW regarding Brady.....No one except Brady himself and the all mighty above know how long he will play...if our OL gets worse and Brady gets decked often in the next few years then you can move up that retirement sooner than later.....Aikman started to get beaten down as his team started to deteriorate and got out of football when he was at the height of his career with several super bowls in hand and lots of money in the bank...it could happen with Brady,he doesn't need the money and he has children and family...no one knows for sure what will happen there, especially no one in this forum.

Who said anything about the top 3 rpunds or the 5th to 7th rounds ???? I have no problem if BB wants to move down a round or move some picks to 2012. It's a strategy that's worked for him. You are the one who suggests he change his strategy because you see the twilight of Brady's career. He's probably going to play at least 5 more years. Why change approaches now?

What I am saying is that the past few years BB has done drafting such as giving up an early 3rd rounder FOR EXAMPLE for 3 or 4 lower round picks or into next year.

This 2011 draft seems weak to me in talent after the first 3 rounds....I would hope little trading or swapping of picks is done this year and definately not any into 2012 unless its done with 5th,6th or 7th rounders.

Lets not act like Belichick has been a draft guru the past 10 years,he has had some lean years along the way.......for the past 2 years the drafts AT THIS POINT from 09 and 10 seem to be working out sucessfully but it had not been that great for a few years previous to that - 06,07 and 08 were not his best (not counting FA movements involved in those).

Receiver, back, outside backer. Fookin eh does ESPN loooove shiny highlights!

I'm not sure that the "need" positions and "playmaker" positions matchup that well. Oh, there's pass rusher, but that one's always problematic. And if you assume there's no possible counterscheme to the Ryan defense, I guess WR is a need too.

Ingram would be a fit for Dilfer's strategy, however.

Actually, I expect buzz that the Pats are trying to trade up to snatch Ingram from Miami. Even if it's totally untrue, maybe Miami can be spooked into making a trade up. Besides, Ingram's father used to play for a team BB coached.
