Ellis Hobbs: heart of a lion

I believe Ellis is not only a starting caliber cb, but can become a #1 caliber cb. He just had another surgery on his wrist, and it will be immobilized for 8-12 weeks. He played the whole season with this, using press coverage techniques. Ellis has earned his place as a core member of this team, and should be a fan favorite for years to come.

For the life of me I don't understand the impatience with this guy. He'd played about half a season coming in, played hurt most of this year and held his own. But that's not good enough for some people around here.

great article and good find. I remember when Samuel was going to be at best a nickel and would probably be cut. Hobbs seems to be about on pace, was it so long ago that we had Poole to kick around? I for one look forward to Ellis lining up next year. One thing is for sure though that Hobbs is a classy individual as long as he keeps the adrenaline down.

At 5'9 1/4", with a 42" vertical (among the 10 best VJ's in combine history) he is tall enough.

I was thinking the same thing about Samuel, all reports were he was at best a nickle - I say coaching put him in the place to make those plays along with the fact that Hobbs was on the otherside at times and teams were ataying away from him

I like Hobbs and while I would like to keep asante, I think Cap hit makes it a mute point

He'll be around soon enough, I'm sure. Other than McDaniels, Hobbs is his pet project

Hobbs is one of my favorite players. As long as he doesn't let his fire take too much control (unsportsmanlike penalties and what not), he will continue to improve and be a GREAT player. He takes full advantage of his physical abilities, especially at such a pedestrian height.

I think having Rodney as a presence for the youngster is huge in his development.

Agreed. Hobbs has good speed and is very tough. I think we're going to see continuted improvement next year. The wrist also must have hurt his strength, as I'm assuming he couldn't lift much with the injury.

5' 9 5/8" Tye Hill (1st cb taken in 2006 draft), Terence McGee
5' 9 1/2" Pacman Jones (consensus top 10 pick)
5' 10'' even: Nathan Vasher, Deangelo Hall, Lito Sheppard, Andre Dyson, Fernando Bryant
5' 9 7/8" Sheldon Brown
5' 8 5/8" Antoine Winfield
5' 9 7/8" Dre Bly
5' 9 3/4" Justin Miller (1st rd grade at cb before predraft arrest).

Everyone would love to have Mike Haynes back (6'2''). These days, for every Haynes there is a Darrell Green (5'8'') The current league values shorter cbs, otherwise Pacman would not have been a consensus top 10 pick, Tye Hill would not have been the 1st cb taken last year, and Justin Miller would not have carried a 1st rd grade prior to arrest on the eve of the draft. Shorter cbs are frequent pro bowl performers in the league. Vasher, Hall, Sheppard, Dyson, Bryant, Brown, Bly, Winfield all have made the probowl at cb.

Hobbs stayed on the field despite his injury, that was the point of the original post...

Well, the next guy to really hold that position opposite Clayborn after the tall Mike Haynes left was none other than the Hobb(e)sian Ronnie Lippett. He was pretty short as far as CBs go.

Samuel is Clayborn, Law is Haynes, Hobbs is Lippett.

I think an NFL team can get by just fine with Clayborn and Lippett in the d-backfield.

I like Hobbs. He's still young and needs to work on his technique. He doesn't seem to swivel quick enough with his hips for a guy his size. He showed great improvement as the season went on, though and played a monster game in Indy. Wayne wasn't effective until he went into the slot, and away from Ellis.

How is Law tall? He's 5' 11". Antwan Spann is taller.
