Draft Three Receivers In The 6th and 7th

As we enter the 6th with at least four picks available, we might consider drafting three receivers (and a camp competition punter). This would increase the chances of finding another Brown, Edelman or Givens. And no, value doesn't matter much. We are looking at longshots and playing hunches at this point in the draft. It seems that wide receiver is one position where it is most possible to succeed in the mid 6th and 7th.

I wouldn't be suprised if BB does this and does not draft a WR with his first four picks. If he has confidence in Brandon Tate starting opposite of Moss opening day, so be it.

I think its important to note that what makes a reciever here is opportunity. Welker going down early in the year gave Edleman his chance and he made the most of it. Galloway failing opened the door more for Tate and his injuries held him back. Drafting another reciever high will take reps from Tate, and I like the idea of finding a backup/ST ace like Aiken in the lower rounds to minimally take Slater's job.

Marcus Easley, 6'3"/210, 4.39
Shay Hodge, 6'1"/209, 4.62 - crafty route-runner with good hands
Seyi Ajirotutu, 6'4"/204, 4.60 - another good route-runner, good sideline body control
Freddie Barnes, 6'0"/215, 4.67 - physical, has proven he can get open and catch
Kerry Meier, 6'2"/224, 4.62

Also in the running, IMHO:

Pat have taken a long look at Emmanuel Sanders (5'11"/186, 4.40, 1.49 10yd, 4.10 ss, 6.64 cone), though he projects more as a slot guy, from what I understand. He's now a 5th-rounder and moving up.

Blair White (6'2"/209, 4.49, 1.50 10yd, 4.03 ss, 6.69 cone) is connected to Hoyer, of course. Smart, accomplished route-runner with very good hands (and one of my long-time binkys). Now a 4th-rounder and moving up (told ya so).

And, of course:
Andre Roberts - 4th round
Joe Webb - 5th round and moving up

Any of these guys might easily displace Stanback. If one of them can match Jabar Gaffney's contributions, that would be plenty.

Deep WR class. Opening day of camp this year will probably feel like Christmas for a lot of QBs.

To have a chance they will have to play well on special teams. Return ability, blocking and block-shedding, jamming and unjamming(?) ability is required. The gunner on punt coverage gets jammed by two guys. I think that's why Slater was drafted. I'd rather go with OLB, DT, TE/FB though.

It is very hard to find WRs in the late rounds like David Givens and Troy Brown who are rare treasures around these parts...
they do exist but its a diamond in the rough in some drafts.

I would be hoping the emphasis to be for some OL depth in those later rounds as well as a Punter and a corner,those are needs as well.

Having confidence in Tate is about as risky as expecting Crable or McKenzie to produce,not much or nothing at all to see on the pro level yet.

Its too much of a longshot IMO that BB does not draft a receiver in the first 2 rounds,I would be shocked if he does not, I expect a receiver and a TE to be drafted in 2 of his four 2nd rounders unless he trades any away.

As hard as it is to pick NEs selections I would say a DT is drafted in the first,followed by a RB/TE/WR/LB with those 4 second picks....unless some trading is involved to move into the third.

Andre Roberts - 4th round

These two are among my top 5 WRs. Sanders will probably go earlier than Roberts, and I recently read that he's moved up into round three consideration. If true, and BB wants him, it wouldn't surprise me if NE selects him a round earlier. Of course this applies to all Pats prospects.

Also, if BB wants a larger target than the aforementioned, there are some very good developmental prospects to consider from round four on -- some of whom have been listed here.

I agree that we should select multiple WRs that we can expect to cut in the late rounds. But I would be very disappointed if we don't grab one of the top guys early. If we haven't grabbed one before the 4th round (and third round would be perfectly good since I expect Mardy Gilyard to still be there) then the Patriots will have missed a big opportunity.

Daniel Jeramiah has talked to a lot of teams who don't think Easley makes it out of the 3rd round given his pro day and his make up (hard worker, finishing his degree and internship while preparing for the draft, etc).

Freddie Barnes, Bowling Green, catches everything thrown his way and I would love to see him picked in the 7th round. I think that there are some intriguing WR prospects late, and it would be good to stack the practice squad with two of them even if none of them crack the top 4 even pre-Welker's return.
