Seeing the difference from 1996 to 2016 is somewhat shocking.

2007 was first team in history to run 50% or more plays from the shotgun

No. Shula with the 1978 chuck rule and Bill Polian's re-emphasis broke football. The 2007 Patriots just took that stupid rule to its logical conclusion.
 
Cowboys were the first team I remember using it effectively.
 
I find it interesting that the best scoring offense in the NFL last year had the lowest shotgun %age. Have we finally overshot the shotgun use?
